Hit to H-D by India because of Trump's trade war

unless we can sort out a whole bunch of non-tariff barriers in a big hurry so that we can trade with the rest of the world and tell the Americans to go to hell.

We already benefit from the Euro/Canada free trade bilateral agreement Trudeau set up and we are party to the TransPacific as well...the US is not.

The Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) creates a free trade zone covering a market of 500 million people with a combined GDP of $13.5 trillion, according to Global Affairs Canada.

In 2017, Canada's merchandise trade with the 10 other CPTPP countries amounted to more than $95 billion, Global Affairs said.

The government claims that once the trade deal enters into force for Canada, it's expected to boost the country's GDP by $4.2 billion.

It is not without controversy tho...

"We won’t forget, and neither will your customers or your now very HAPPY competitors!"

What competitors does he think he's referring to

a doosh from Queens then Manhattan has no clue about these things
how the folks in the American Heartland feel connected to him is baffling

I don't think they (HD loyalists) are gonna break from HD in large numbers
too much Heritage, too much of who they are, bikes, clothing, the whole lifestyle

and I'm pretty sure this was by design from the EU
intentionally chose a tariff that would divide Trump from his base

Yeah, proof he really has zero understanding of how strong HD’s brand loyalty is - one could probably count on 2 hands the number of HD loyalists they will consider anything other than a HD for their next bike.

That’s if they *get* a next bike. The issue is most of them are getting too old to ride and the new generation don’t want them (too expensive, too stodgy), which a Harley’s underlying problem.

You know, the average American knows virtually nothing about other countries and could care less. In general they know even less about trade tariffs and exactly how they would work or be applied.

A discussion a month or so ago in Ohio with a Trump supporter re tariffs was revealing. I asked how a 25% steel tariff would be collected. Effectively, his response was that the exporter would pay the 25% tariff to the US government and he said there would be no impact on prices to Americans. Exporters would be discouraged to export because of the tax or tariff they had to pay.......

I explained that it did not work this way. The exporter sell to a US customer at a certain price. The importer, a US company, would have to pay the tariff when the steel entered the US and this extra cost would be passed on to US customers and ultimately be paid for by US consumers. Trump's rationale being that US companies would buy from US providers instead of paying the tariff assuming US providers even had the product or could sell it competitively.

While this was a pretty simplistic example, he was not happy with my suggestion that US importers or US consumers would pay more. Makes no sense he said, that means we're getting screwed over, that's not how it works and he left looking fairly p**** off.

Its interesting other countries have been quite strategic with their tit for tat tarrifs

China recently targeted his base (aka Rust belt + Red state) with their tarrifs

Harley taking their business abroad will do the same, hitting him and the republicans where it hurts most

H-D didn't get this big and successful , and weather as many bad years as they have without a bit of business acumen. They'll take SOME portion of the business abroad, The Brasil plant will service South America, Thailand will look after Asia and Australia? and a possible Euro plant could get put together. They aren't leaving Wisconson , a portion will stay, its like moving Jack Daniels to NY, it would be a bad fit.

Odd that H-D just opened a new store in Oakville and the Yamaha dealer closed. The motorcycle business is a funny thing.

Yamaha aint closing any plants, or moving production facilities
