Recent experiences with Euro mail order companies (FC-Moto, Motostorm)?

Looking at buying a Givi Trekker setup for my Tenere, pricing seems to be about half of what's available locally.

Anyone order recently? How long were shipping times? How bad was duty?

was a couple years ago ...bought two jackets on different buys.

First Scott jacket came straight in no additional cost.'
Second one a few weeks later got nicked for tax and maybe duty ...seems luck of the draw.
Came in quickly - price was really good.

I have a contact in New Zealand who handles US Givi so if you email the exact stuff maybe he can do better for you.
Good guy and the shipments are from the US.

You end up financially ahead if nothing goes wrong.

However, if the product is defective or damaged, then it will end up costing you untold $$$ and time.

Ordered a Schuberth from Italy. It was easily $250 cheaper than buying it locally, even after shipping and duty.

Helmet arrived and the flip-up locking mechanism jammed the first time I tried it on.

After many e-mails back and forth with pictures and videos to prove it was really broken and not user-error, I sent it back to Italy at my cost. Took two weeks to get there at the cheapest courier option.

Italian shop didn't send me a replacement, but instead forwarded the helmet to Schuberth in Germany to get fixed. That took another month.

When it was repaired, the Italian shop wanted me to pay for shipping again, and it was a big battle for them to pick up the tab. Thankfully, it was done via eBay so at least eBay had my back on this.

Italian shop resent me the helmet but didn't specify on the packing slip that it was a replacement, so I was charged duty a second time. I had to get all my documentation and receipts from the credit card company to request a refund from CRA. That took another month, and a lot of effort on my part.

In the end, I barely broke even if I had ordered locally. And it took nearly two months for me to get my helmet. And to top it off, it's not fixed 100% either. The locking mechanism is sticky and not as good as my last Schuberth. But f*ck me if I'm going to go through the warranty process again!

I've ordered many things from the US and Europe. Most times it goes smoothly and you end up saving a lot of money. But once in a while the process ends up costing you more in terms of time and frustration.

Scott Jacket is half price but be careful with Euro sizes - very different than US/Can cuts

Fortunately my kid was the correct size for the first one we bought and I bought the size up and all was well.

This is most interesting for business (and pork and beef producers) but it should also have benefit for individual consumers, with the removal of duties.)

I put it to the test a couple of weeks ago by purchasing a new leather suit from Germany. It just arrived, with zero duty, just GST. I believe that to be the new normal (but I have not confirmed with CBSA).

It was on sale, but even after currency conversion, shipping and GST, it was about 1/2 price compared to Canadian prices. YMMV"

I ordered a Neck brace on the Friday from a UK company, it Shipped on Monday via DHL ( I know.. I know.. ) The Shipping was $32 all in and included duties/etc . It arrived in the GTA 3 days later. I saved myself $100+ easily. Ironically, the item is "made" by a Canadian company

When I had my Triumph, I order several parts from the UK, and they arrived fast, with little or no duties to be paid on them.

I bought some Held gloves from FC Moto.....seam issue with one glove so I have to send them back off to FC Moto so they can send them to Held Germany for repair or replacement. I contacted Held USA about the issue and they said I can’t send the gloves to them even though they were talking about the problem with Held Germany where the gloves will eventually end up. Dumb.

Wow, looking at the tariff list a huge array of things relevant to motorcycling are 0% now as of Sept 2017. I hadn't even heard of this. I've ordered from Motocard before because even with duty their prices beat Canadian retailers, but it's even more attractive now

Have you tried PJ at http://sportbikes4hireshop.com/? He got me a pretty killer deal on my V35 cases. I kept shipping in the US and went to fetch them myself across the border. Shoot him an email or drop him a PM on FZ1OA.

I have bought a pair of discounted Joe Rocket gloves from Motorcyclegear in the States. The material start to rip after the first use. I contacted Joe Rocket Canada, they said that’s a US model, so have to go thru Joe Rocket US. I contacted Motorcyclegear and they are happy to help send the gloves to JRUS for warranty, but the shipment to them is on me. It’s not worth the extra cost and effort to return the item back for warranty, too much compare the cost of the gloves themselves. I believe most of the online store are very good with their CD, it’s really luck in the draw for quality of products made nowadays.

I will still consider ordering from overseas though.

Good luck!

Great info, thanks everyone!

Hadn't considered the issues with having to send stuff back, that would definitely eat up any savings.

my experience buying overseas....

had an issue with FC-Moto in honoring a new pinlock visor, they would not answer my emails, please or anything, absolutely no response back from them, it was free of charge to them to send it to me, as Schuberth was the ones that were supplying them to vendors to forward to customers, well after a while with nothing I sent a few emails directly to Schuberth, and they took care of it themselves, they actually sent me the pinlock visor, bypassing FC-Moto completely

Yes I can get one here on my own and for my own money, but I figured why should I, it was offered by Schuberth so I figured let's have it....

Otherwise, I saved a ton of cash....

You bought your Scott jackets from www.motoin.de., not FC-Moto. Thread is here: http://www.gtamotorcycle.com/vbforum/showthread.php?186177-great-price-on-a-scott-touring-jacket

I like to keep my money at home and would rather support the local shops.

Bought from FC Moto many times without issue. Got a pair of Spyke leather pants that had some dye bleed, sent a photo and they promptly sent me back a partial refund.

As long as you're good with your sizing and know what you're ordering, shouldn't be a problem.

Not when they overcharge but of course it's your choice..
I had FC-moto listed as our source.......I have no problem supporting local shops if they can be competitive.

Kimpex has online presence you can order from but pick up your order at a local dealer and they share the profits with the dealer.
We are in a disintermediation world and businesses have to cope or close.
I grabbed the SHad bracket from the internet site and could pick it up at Rider's Choice.

and the dealer handles returns.

The dealer doesn't have to stock - still gets a cut and gets drop in traffic. It's not a dairy farm business.

I bought a few items from FC-Moto and had no issues at all. 90% of my money goes to local stores such as GP Bikes, Riders Choice and online retailers like FortNine but when FC-Moto's price including shipping is 40% lower than anything else in Canada, I have no problem ordering from Europe.

I have ordered a LOT of stuff from motostorm in Italy. I have it sent to my US shipping addy at 1000 islands, ride over and pick it up. It’s a nice day ride down number two, and the parkway. Get cheap gas at shannonville.

I ordered a three set of kappa k venture aluminum panniers and two tank bags in one order and I have bought other various items from them. I try to make the order worth the 60 buck shipping, I’m not spending 100 bux, go big or go home. I actually Skyped them at motostorm a couple years ago, I talked to some guy with a sexy Italian accent. Nice guy and helpful.

I have never had any issue with any of my ordering BUT I am buying things that I don’t need to know the sizing for. Mostly bags and whatnot. Everything came quickly and well packaged. Don’t forget to apply your discount codes when ordering. Keep checking the outlet.

Anyway, the luggage set was waaaay cheaper than anything I could find here. As were the givi tank bags. Oh, bought a set of givi e22s from them as well. I can’t even remember everything that I have bought from them...

i hesitate to have it shipped to the house. Paying all the potential extra fees can eat into the cost savings. I’m not a gambler so I take the safe route.
