I sold my cruiser back in February and purchased a Ninja Motorcycle and currently insured with it. I am looking for a second bike now, a similar cruiser to what I had and was insured at $600 annually which was descent. I called for quotes before heading over to see the new used bikes Im interested in seeing and the insurance company quoted me $1000 annually. So same or smaller dispacement bike 2 months after cancelling my one policy for $600 is now $1000 to get coverage. WTF!! They told me there rates have gone up but cmon not like 40%. Can anyone in the indusrty or not explain to me why this is happening and any suggestions I do on this issue would be nice.

Thank you

I don't work in the industry, but we already know insurance is a scam. There's no way around it. Your best bet is to call around as many places as you can find.

Has been mentioned before, the co-operators seem to be giving out great rates for cruisers.

For curiosity's sake, may I ask who your insurer is ?

Had to happen sooner or later, not enough sportbikes left on the road to over-charge for insurance, they are moving on to the cruisers :agave:

There could be numerous reasons why and it just sounds like a load of crap but they can do this - it's possible that they might have raised it on you anyway during the duration you cancelled to the time you got a new bike, would you have been shocked if you got the bill in the mail while still insured on your previous bike.

I have a great rep at Allstate, let me know if you want this details - send me a pm.

CERTAS DIRECT. There original bike quotes were great, I dont know what the hell happened and changed that! I wanted a second bike but not at those rates.

What kind of cruiser did you used to have and what are you looking for quotes on now?

A while back Harleys were hit as hard as supersports with insurance increases. Not sure if metric cruisers suffered the same fate. If you had a Japanese cruiser back then and are looking at a Harley now, that might explain it.

I had a Vstar 1100 paying $600 no collision just 2 months ago sold it, now looking for either another vstar 1100 or a Vulcan 900 Cruiser and both bikes in around the 1k mark no collision.

Age, driving record, and years M licenced?

Sounds to me like you just need to call around more. Unless you have points/tickets on your licence or live in Brampton or some other hot-temp postal code (see the link in my signature) that quote is excessive.

Try Dalton Timmis.

Another vote for the postal code issue. After 3 addresses and 3 increases living in Hamilton over 18 years, I'm being given a 1000 bucks a year off the whole package when I move to Burlington this summer. Address is everything

Motorcycle insurance company premiums are a complete scam, the whole bunch of them just haven't been caught and made to tow the line yet and they are completely destroying the motorcycle industry in this country. My rates have seen a huge increase again this year for absolutely no reason. I fully expect rates will continue to escalate for as long as I keep my bikes on the road, or government changes the rules the insurance companies operate by. The number of motorcycles I see on the road nowadays is way, way down and you can bet the riders still out there are the ones maintaining the healthy insurance company profits. I envy insurance companies, by law have a guaranteed right to be profitable, we should all be so lucky.

Nothing you can do about it except get angry and any suggestion that you change companies annually to get a better rate is a complete crock once you have multiple houses, cars, trucks, tractors, trailers, sea-doos and motorcycles all under the same broker. Insurance companies are playing a numbers game that they can not lose, we are the patrons and collectively they are the casino.

Suddenly the broke(aka immune from lawsuit)kid riding SS dirty doesn't seem so stupid eh?

Until he needs insurance coverage, then he'll seem REALLY stupid.

OP, shop around and see what you get; insurance is a weird game and motorcycles tend to see wild swings in my personal experience...

My swing is broken :( 47 years of paying for motorcycle insurance and I never once seen it swing the other way.

I wasnt even a sparkle in my pappy‘s eye when you got your license. In any case, i’ve found insurance companies dont reward loyalty; i‘ve saved money from switching before.

Im still butthurt that 25 isnt the magic number for affordable SS insurance anymore :(.

Problem # 1 is the small percentage of M/C's on the road. We don't have any clout politically

Problem # 2 is the squid, loud pipe sorts that keep us from getting any sympathy from the other 98%

Problem # 3 is that M/Cs are considered recreational vehicles. You know, rich people own them so sock it to them because they've got money.

Problem # 4 is that crash survival is being achieved through technical advances such as air bags, crumple zones etc. The government shows no interest in upgrading skill standards for drivers. M/Cs do not have the same ability to benefit from safety technology.

We could get into a long discussion on how to fix things but it would end up encompassing everything from the laws of Moses to the price of bananas and still get nowhere. Shop around, hope for the best and have a disposal plan for your bikes when no one wants them.

Too easy!
Driver liability insurance should be on the person and not on every vehicle I own, I can't drive them all at the same time and I'm the same liability no matter what I'm driving or riding.
