I like this. This should indicate if there is a grounding problem? care to explain?

This would bypass the battery's connection to chassis ground since he is suspecting a bad ground connection. But in reality, motorcycles don't really make use of chassis ground. This jumper cable will tell if the bike's battery is any good.
If the OP doesn't have the means to test for voltage, there's probably only one other suggestion to try that hasn't been suggested.
Cycle all the switches in the ignition circuit repeatedly in case one of them is corroded. Ignition, start, kill, kickstand

umm. motorcycles DO in reality make use of the chassis ground; and im certain this bikes coils (and other components) use a ground to the frame/engine block ...just sayin
