Ear protection

Would I be better using the thinner Sena velcro pads and using ear plugs? I tried before, but the damn plugs kept falling out of my ears when I put my helmet on so I just gave up.

For anyone using the roll-up expandable foam earplugs, make sure you're inserting them correctly, which means they're barely visible outside your ear canal. If you look like Frankenstein, they're not in deep enough and can get dislodged when you put your helmet on. They're also less effective when not inserted properly, but also, a proper insertion can lead to pain in the ear canal, depending on the size of the plug.

I'm still searching for the perfect sized earplug for my ears.

Check Costco for custom ones, they are about $70 I think. Not as effective as foam ones based on my experience.

I've had custom made ones from a hearing institute, custom ones made at home from a kit and the foam ones. Oddly, the foam ones are the best. I have Howard Leight ones I think. I bought a box of 200. The ones I have are fluorescent yellow and fluorescent pink and very comfy. It depends on your ear canal as to which foam ones will work best for you. There’s also wax ones that are pretty good and I use those for sleeping sometimes. I also listen to my music through my Sena with no issues and can hear traffic around me. I never ride without them.

I purchased a pair custom Costco ones. They are comfortable to use, but the foam ones are quieter and I've stopped using the Costco ones. The other thing with the Costco plugs is that the relatively hard shell moves slightly when you talk and this telegraphs noise to your inner ear, very annoying at stops or when using your Scala.

These are the ones I found to be the best over the years.

1) Mack's silicone putty ear plugs are the absolute best for hearing protection if you want a comfortable reusable plug. 22db noise reduction, not bad but they're waterproof and they mold your ear.

2) Spark Plugs by Moldex. You might think that all foam ear plugs are the same, but that's not true. Spark plugs are the best at 33db NR and they're the most comfortable.

3) 3M 1100 foam earplugs. A little less comfortable than the Spark Plugs and less effective @29DB. But you can buy them in boxes at Bolts Plus cheap.

I have Senna ear buds, but they're useless against wind noise. They do block everything else out well though. Good if you need tunes on slow jaunts.
