Crossing into the USA using a rented pickup with a friend's trailer.

Hey everyone,
Asking here because the CBP website has no info on my question and I can't contact their international phone line ((202) 325-8000).
I'm doing a trip to the states, renting a pickup to tow my friend's trailer with my bike on it. I know i am okay to take the rental across the border, but do I need any documents for the trailer?
Just wondering if anyone has done the some.

Have your rental paperwork for the vehicle ready and waiting if you're asked to see them.

Ditto for the trailer - ownership for it, and all bikes on it.

I doubt you'll have any issues at the border. Just be 10000% sure that your rental agreement for the truck specifies that you're allowed to take it across the border - lots of rental agreements explicitly disallow that now.

personally I'd have a copy of the rental agreement, ownership for the bike, and your buddies ownership for the trailer. 99% of the time they wont ask about the trailer , and possibly the bike. Its the 1% I worry about. Easy enough to carry complete documentation.

to add to the above
coming back into Canada without the complete documentation could be a hassle
I've usually had closer scrutiny from Canada CBP on return, than on entry to US

DHS isn't overly worried about a Canadian possibly leaving a vehicle in the US
but CBP is most definitely looking for people trying to do sneaky imports
