MotoGP 2018

Agreed, I really do want to believe Thailand is a one-off and that come Qatar he'll be up there.

As for Baz, probably; I don't make claims because they're popular, hence my Rossi posts, but because it would be interesting to see if he would be a rider to push beyond the limits of the bike just to prove he deserves to be on the grid. That always makes for exciting racing and hopefully rapid bike development. If he is championship material is another question entirely, but I would like to see him and Zarco pull KTM into title contention in a few years. That way Binder could team up with Zarco by 2020.
I am not sure I watch the same Motogp you watch.

Well, that's a given, isn't?

And to be honest these past few seasons Moto3 has still remained the more exciting part of a race weekend for me despite GP providing many good races. I often fell asleep due to Moto2 boredom and watched later that day or week.

MotoGP is really just RossiGP to most and to be honest, I'd rather not dwell on that until the seasons starts, but seeing new rider talent move into the GP class and shaking things up is more exciting to see than seeing the same guys win every year, Marc included. Other than Mav I really don't know who can really give him a proper battle, Dovi is an amazing rider that had a mathematical possibility, but the truth is: he was lucky HRC acceleration development and reliability struck the way they did. This year they seem to have both sorted before Qatar.

While I know its a long shot, the combination of a hungry rider (like Baz) knowing his career is over if he doesn't perform is placed on a factory ride (that is still in its early days) and has plenty of resources and success in other categories doesn't excite you, then yeah, we don't watch the same thing.

Back to my analogy: Webber never really had good drives, but could put in the odd points finish race here or there and was an old hand Vet when Red Bull finally came into its own and Coulthard left, and by then Vettel was hailed as the posterchild for Red Bull's racer program and given #1 status in all but name, but despite that Mark was set out to show he still had it in him: fireworks ensued.

How far away until Qatar?

I know Tom Sykes doesn't think so either.

You do realize Baz has already gone back to WSBK right?

Yea this is why I think I am not watching the same Motogp he is, maybe he is behind a season or 2. He should catch up to everyone else anytime soon.

And Baz already had a factory ride. He did ok....

I feel like we’re talking to a flat-earther.

Haha, that's quite the parallel, I take it my Webber-Baz comparison went well, then; I had no idea he had a factory ride in GP. Well, either way, I hope he gets another shot at MotoGP, I think that, my tirade about young drivers not withstanding, he may have had more to offer than results or records may indicate.

Anyhow, I hope that shakes the off-season cob-webs a bit. There is supposed to be another Marquez documentary released this month, right?

I saw some of the footage from the event in Cervera back in November, and if that jokingly harsh (albeit incredibly honest) part that Alex said about Marc makes the final cut it will be a good window into that dynamic.

jeez, don't leave me hanging; what did alex say about marc marquez jokingly harsh?

It was self-deprecating humor that would be better seen in its context. That YT video got pulled not long after as I wanted to post it in the 2017 thread.

Anyhow, Qatar shaping out nicely for Mav with p1 day Day 1:

It was also announced that Yamaha will be dividing their efforts between Mav and Rossi in terms of development, which is honestly about time they did; their is no point having a repeat of 2017 on their hands and at least this gives them a better chance at this year's championship. Hopefully Mav keeps the pace up.

wow, suzuki at the top of the list, nice go Andrea Iannone

He looked fast.. as did the Ducatis. I'm amazed at how loud they are in person, as I've only been to live F1 races in the V10 era. Very few people in attendance at the circuit on day one, even though the weather was a gem.

Day two I arrived around 3pm local time and tried getting a free temporary paddock pass (you have to give your name and number and go on a waiting list). They called me up after the red flag session when few guys went off at Turn 1. Shame they only allow you inside the paddock for an hour. I tried talking to a few Yamaha guys and they weren't the friendliest. I had better luck with the KTM team down at the very end of the garages :)

He rode for Kawasaki Factory in WSBK, not in GP. For a rider you really like you sure don't know anything about him.

What an era... what year? I wish i had gone to Indy or Montreal back in 2006 but I was in the middle of midterms and couldn't go; I just wanted to hear that V10 BMW screaming. I lived in Maranello for a summer and got to hear the end of the V8s in Fiorano and the V6s being tested at the factory.

How does the sound compare, I've never actually heard a Motogp in person, are the v4s louder or less so than the inlines?

I don't necessarily like Baz, so much as commiserate with his situation, and felt if given the opportunity he could push development next to Zarco at KTM rather well... I just finished watching his WSBK race and I'm not sure what to make of it as I don't follow the series but I thought he'd be much higher.

Qatar Day 2 test Wrap Up.

I attended the F1 races in Montreal roughly 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2006 or so with the V8s. I'll never forget the sound of a Jordan V10 cruising towards the back hairpin in 2001... it sent goosebumps up my spine. Those F1 cars were screamers and whiners (when the revs dropped through the downshifts).. the traction control rumbled quite a bit.

By comparison, the MotoGP bikes have a deeper growl at all rev ranges, but especially at lower RPM exiting the pits off the limiters. The sound resonates through the seats and even through the sound proof glass in the media center.

As for the V4s? The Pramac Ducatis were quite loud. KTM were probably the loudest in my mind (I wore earplugs), while the Suzukis were the least "harsh" to me. The Yamahas and Aprilias have their distinctive sounds, for sure.

Highlight of my hour in the paddock was being allowed this close:

Lucky enough to hear the Ferrari V12's live back at Montreal in the early 90's, quite possibly the most porn an ear drum can ever have.

how can one have more to offer than the results he produces?

Very cool, upon reflection: 2006 onward was when they introduced V8s, so those were mostly V10 GP.

How was today's testing? Zarco topped the sheets and got close to JLO's qualy 2008 record by the sound of it. Apparently Herve was expecting a Yamaha works support for Zarco that made a contribution to dropping Yamaha. Apparently Tech3 will have a LCR situation for 2019-21.

Zarco taking Rossi's seat made sense, but did he really think Zarco was going to Mav's seat by the end of 2017?

I'm watching the wet running now, and Dovi and Capparossi are going over the 2 laps, Petrucci isn't liking the spray and visibility issues. How much rain are they actually expecting? Marc is saying its rideable, too.

how can one have more to offer than the results he produces?

Over riding the bike without factory support to keep up the development? Ok, I will admit my Baz theory its a stretch and is merely conjecture, so who knows...

With nearly every manufacturer now using winglets I couldn't help but enter the discussion. :) Here are my thoughts:

It would be the same as asking if the wingglets are a waste on F1. There is a reason they use them.

According to what they say, it keeps the bike down on acceleration helping with wheelie control, I am sure there are other reasons
