any way I can cut the line for knee surgery?

hurt my knee several years ago but I managed with it instead of seeking a doctors help. big mistake. The last year it has gotten a lot worse and so I got myself a family doctor after 30 years without one. So I get an mri and the results are ligament damage and joint damage. My family doctor mentions the possibility of knee joint replacement but he isn't the surgeon. unofficial.

I am now waiting for an appointment with the surgeon. I have been waiting now about 3 months just for my first office visit with this surgeon. I still don't even have an appointment date...waiting.

My doctor says I am on a list. and after seeing the surgeon will likely be waiting more than a year for my surgery.

Anyone have any suggestions on how I might be able to speed up this process? I walk with a limp and the pain is bad enough that I now try to avoid walking on concrete or asphalt. going down stairs is a pitiful site. ideas?

probably only way to speed it up is to go south and pay cash

Ask if you can look at other catchment areas if you're willing to travel? I don't even know if you can do that but some areas are busier than others.

Try calling the Fowler Kennedy Sports Medicine Clinic here in London.

If they can't do it for you they may at least give you some more info on how to get it done quicker.

are you doing anything to alleviate the damage? like using a cane, crutch, brace or the like?

I have on a few occasions used a cane when really bad, but I got a shot of steroids in the knee and that helps a bit. If walking on dirt trails (yes I still walk my dog often) I can walk about a half km, sometimes a full km, before it becomes too painful to enjoy.

ty for the response. I was hoping/thinking that there must be some sort of priority system based on need. I will contact them.

Call the surgeons office or hospital and ask about being on the cancellation list if a spot comes up. Then call often to ask if a spot came up and tell them you can be there within a few hours, even if you can't. (you need to fast for the surgery anyway) I've had surgery on both knees and both times my surgery date was moved way up.

Who are you waiting to see? I have a relative that has replaced thousands of knees. Government has cut him back to a few days a week to save money as surgeons are expensive. smh.

I guess it's too late to become a professional athlete? Perhaps there's a niche market in limp porn...

Seriously though, only a rare few find pleasure in pain. Can you go to physiotherapy in the interim to help with pain management?

Have you tried to see if a physiotherapist can help with the walking? A good/honest physio will tell you in one or two visits whether they can help.

No reason to limit yourself to one opinion. You should be seeking out 2nd, 3rd opinions now. We "interviewed" 3 surgeons for my daughter's ACL surgery before we decided who we wanted. Doc personality and schedule affected our decision. Got surgeon referrals from family doc, hospital fracture clinic and a sports doc.

OHIP calendar restarts in Sept. Therefore late summer vacations are usual for the busier surgeons b/c they have already maxed out their OHIP allowance.

My sports doc clinic is in Etobicoke. They have doc/physio/Chiro on site. I'm also using a very good physio therapist in Mississauga. Let me know if you want contact info.

I am waiting to see Dr. Daly (spelling? it is hand written and hard to read) in Cambridge on coronation Blvd. My doctor told me that I could go to his office and try to talk to them. I made this post in the hopes of knowing what to say to try and get moved up.

A lot of it depends on your doctor. It's a fraternity. Mine is on the OMB and Board of Director of Milton General and Jo Brant. HE has friends and he has pull. Last time I broke a clavicle I was sent home with a butterfly brace. Had an appointment with a surgeon by the end of the week. He recommended no surgery. You're fired. Had an appointment the next Friday with Pyper at Brant (he's good, but we have a difference of opinion on stitches vs. wire). Told him I wanted it fixed. Was on the table Monday morning (Thanksgiving Day). It's the same with anything else. Was having heart palpitations. Had an appointment with the best cardiologist in the GTA 3 days later. Was at the clinic for testing 2 days after that (you're healthy, dial back the coffee).

Getting past the lady at the front desk of my relatives office is the hard part. I think most of her job is keeping people away from the doc (presumably so they can focus on patients being currently treated?)

lol limp porn eh hmmm. pro athlete? No that went out the door around 87 when I had my other knee fixed...torn ligament, cartlidge, and multiple hairline fractures. Had 3 surgeries on that one, but it still works ok. I have no coverage for physio.

A few years ago I needed a hip replacement. Was about a 6-9 months wait. Kept calling for cancellations. Then Wow. Next week. Done.

yeah I think the sqeeky wheel gets the grease. Im going to try and get into the fowler kennedy sports clinic in london as mentioned by caboose. When I had my other knee injury I had an initial surgery where they removed the torn cartlidge in elliot lake. The surgeon from elliot lake then sent me to the london university hospital for the synthetic ligament repair, and they also put a tight band around my lower leg bone where the hairline fractures were going lengthwise down my leg. The doctors name was Dr Rock. Then I went back there for my final surgery to have my joint smoothed out, which was done by a doctor fowler, who I suspect is the doctor from the fowler kennedy sports clinic today. All of this was done quite quickly, but it was workers compensation. guess workers comp has the grease.
