Track is a lot of fun. I started on a Ninja 500 with sport touring tires and no modifications. It had no power compared to a 600 and the brakes were terrible, but it teaches you to be efficient with your speed. Hypersport tires are a better bet though. They will give you more margin for error.
Everyone had their first track day once, so don't be afraid to ask a faster rider for some coaching. At a trackday most riders are more than willing to give you a hand. Usually one of the guys from the fast group is your best bet, since they have the lines down.
