It's bad enough that kids don't understand the consequences of their actions and hurt emselves, but when they hurt others it's that much worse.

I think it will show them that what they're doing is no just a big joke by demonstrating that adults take this stuff seriously. The few sociopathic kids will probably just pile it on even more but I think the others will think it through a bit harder and back off for the most part.
Plus, the kid will have a cool story to tell that none of class mates will get to experience.
Good news for a change.
