More options are always good, but I think repeater signals might have more effect. Hi-viz gloves with retroreflective stripes are another possibility (saw them today at the mall). No batteries or wires to fail. It would take time for the general public to figure out what flashing gloves mean though. Who remembers their hand signals?
 
Left is pretty common, cause you are pointing where you are going. I purposely do it for right sometimes...just to keep it alive.
 
One drawback of the gloves I posted is that people may use their right hand for signaling right, rather than proper hand signals.

Its a decent idea, but then so is stock signals on the bikes that people remove for these tiny hard to see signal lights.
 
My right hand is on the throttle, not sticking out to indicate a right turn. Instead on on the glove, have it on your shoulders. Hell, integrate them into shoulder armour. Hmmm...patent pending.
