Theft Fears

Hello good people!

Wanted to get some opinions on what you do against thieves who scout you/your bike?

I had a scare as I was bringing a bike home on my truck. I was followed all across town very aggressively - no one else on the road and they were on my tail the entire time. It was clear these thieves were after my license plate to steal the bike another time. Police were called and had them escort me home. This is my first time owning a bike with some value, which is why my first 5 bikes were chosen for not being on top of the HotList.

Riding around town with your plates exposed, have you ever noticed someone follow you? Do you have fears of being followed home? What do you look out for? What do you do?

I'm thinking of having to take a long detour through surrounding neighbourhoods before getting on the main road of arriving home.
Really sucks.

Interested in your thoughts.

Ride Safe!

Did you get their plate number? You have no location in your profile, so we cannot offer you any locations specific info. Here in Toronto there's very little you can do to prevent a sophisticated thief from stealing your bike. A private garage in a single family home might be best.

I make sure I'm well insured, any mods and changes are reported so its never a question of getting value. And I'm lucky enough to have a secure garage with an alarm and locks.

Doesn't mean I won't be a victim, my garage has been broken into once, tools stolen not bikes, but I won't be out of pocket if it happens.

I'm kinda surprised they showed up. Where do you live roughly? Also, they were eyeballing a first gen VFR800?

Comprehensive has always been pretty reasonable for my rides, so I don't sweat it too much. Otherwise there aren't many places you can park a bike that are secure "enough", maybe if you had a hefty chain and anchor.

Were you able to file a claim for the tools? (and if yes how did that go)

Im currently afraid of global warming, African killer bees, Isis, North Korea and right hand hair pins at the MX track, so im at capacity and can no longer accept new fears. Motorcycle theft being the legitimate concern that it is I had to outsource this fear to an insurance company for an affordable monthly fee, so for the time being they are afraid on my behalf.

The other thing you can do is hire a paid duty officer to follow you around at a very affordable rate of $67.08 an hour

hope this helps

Yeah it was great sense of relief. I'm sure they can't do much but look out for the car. No license plates unfortunately. This was in the wee hours in the morning and I've seen the same car come from the same spot where it started tracking me but maybe that's just the paranoia in me

I opted for full coverage this year for sure. But my fears aren't with the bike, it was more the threat with the family/loved ones. I can always get a new bike, but I'd be completely turned off from owning a more valuable bike if my family is on the line.

And no, not the VFR. I don't think I'll post any private info openly anymore.

Thanks for the early responses folks!

Hair pins? Do wives/girlfriends throw them on the track after their men have roared past to hinder the competition with mysterious flats?

Anyhow, the OP knows what to do. Don't advertise the presence of luxury goods and always carry theft insurance. That bike should have been covered when in-transit or shipped via van. My two nickels.

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean people aren't out to eff u up. So kudos to op for situational awareness. Where to go from here? Dunno, maybe drop out, turn on, tune out, drop back in, turn off and tune in. That'll throw them off your trail.

That'd be through home insurance/home contents insurance, more than likely. I think in most cases if you can prove things, then you pay around a $1000 deductible and they pay the rest.

No bike thief is going to threaten your family, much less yourself for a bike. Pretty stupid thieves if the are aggressively following you. How do you aggressively follow? Were they right on you bumper every stop? You've seen the same vehicle at the same area multiple times and can't get a plate #?

Have full coverage ins. and don't worry about it and just ride.

I'm thinking its the opposite. Some guy driving around at night looking for HIS stolen bike and seeing something similar and following to see if op is a thief.

.

I see what you did there................that's hilarious.

OP - worry less, ride more, no one is going to harm you or your family to steal a motorcycle

I filed under household insurance, I had $500 deductible at the time. Police were called as 4 houses on the street all had the same thing happen. I had to buy replacement tools and send the receipts into the insurance brokerage to receive a cheque. It went extremely well and i was pretty happy, it was about $5,500. of stuff.

If thieves were going to assault you, family, and/or loved ones, they'd be following a 100k+ exotic car, not a sub 10k used bike...

Just saying...

There is absolutely nothing you can do to prevent someone from "spotting" you. I mean, you're afraid of someone following you for a bike loaded in your trunk/trailer - would that mean you would be afraid to just take the bike out for a ride?

Theft insurance is the way to go.

They were probably undercover cops thinking you were the thief. Why not transport your bike during the day if you're so paranoid? Much less chance of running into undesirables.

Never had any of those concerns about my plates or being followed. I even post pics without my plates blurred because I don't care. This is what insurance is for. Live life with less stress.
