Toronto condo large item disposal question

The condo I live in doesn't want us to throw large items (beds) in the disposal area; instead they want us to deal with it instead

I noticed the city does dispose of this stuff. Why exactly is this and what's the worst case scenario if I give them the finger and throw it in the disposal area anyway?

Are you supposed to call the city and let them know that you have something big for collection?

Most condos in Toronto use private garbage collection, they do not get municipal service (yet still pay 25 times more property tax than the 3 houses that had garbage collection and were knocked down to build the condo) . I have never heard of a condo telling you to hire your own garbage truck, that's a new one. What do the condo by-laws say about garbage?

They have some notices saying no electronics and what not (large furniture included) in the dump room..I've put a TV there before and it disappeared lol

However, since I'm booking the elevator to move a bed up it wouldn't be very hard to figure out who's dumping a bed in there

I've got a huge issue w/ the building management as they keep ****ing hiring incompetent security guards so this is skewing my judgment to just scream "**** the rules."

Haha, I was working near an apartment building one time with an outdoor dumpster. Everyone on the dumpster side of the building just launched their trash off their balconies in the general direction of the dumpster (including furniture). I don't know how the rest of the residents threw out their garbage, no way in hell I would walk within 100' of that dumpster as you were likely to end up as a greasy spot in the parking lot.

Are you buying a new mattress? Many stores will take away the old one for free/low amount of money.

My condo management is just as bad. Perhaps it is just bad across the board?

That being said, it's also bad because they're letting people scream "**** the rules" resulting in jammed garbage chutes every week, and on my floor specifically, people end up jamming the garbage chute room to the point where the door doesn't open anymore because they're too lazy to bring larger items downstairs...

Management is aware - notices being put up and taken down within the week.

I'm starting to get an idea of which units are doing this as some packages are left with their unit# on it. Some people are going to start waking up to garbage emptied in front of the door soon.

If you look on Craigslist under "Free" you will see countless beds, fridges, sofas, pianos etc. All are for pickup only, bring your own help. Basically, please take away my junk.

I suppose you could call one of the junk removal places but make sure you get a firm price before committing because many will scam you with surcharges.

At a previous job, they brought in 1-800-got-junk. I expected to get hosed, but they took away an entire stake truck of stuff for ~200. Overall it was a very positive experience.

As for me, its depends on condos. If it's a luxury one, there won't be any problems with garbage. For example, do you believe, that such problems will exist in Sugar Wharf Condo? I don't.

What makes them incompetent. Although it’s not a difficult job there is a HUGE difference from condo security and everything else. There job realistically is sit at the desk watch a few cameras and direct visitors and sign for your package. They escort the contracts around and stand and babysit when they enter your suite in an emergency. They babysit a building. You have a condo board who oversees with management the security company. Enough complaints. That guard can be removed and replaced. Contracts can be changed. What company is there.

Why do you think so? Just shared with you...why such reaction?

It is strange when your only post on a motorcycle forum includes a link to a development in progress. Also, I don't understand what would bring you to the conclusion that sugar wharf specifically would operate differently than the majority of existing developments.

And his history here can be measured in hours. Probably a sock puppet account made by someone who doesn't want the shilling associated with their regular account.

Options to follow the rules and not have the aggravation (and stress) of constantly fighting the system... cheapest to most expensive.

1) Pay the extra to have the people delivering the new mattress to take away the old, which requires you to not be fighting the system on delivery (who/how) and where you acquired the new bed/mattress... Most delivery services working with legit retailers will offer this option, furniture, appliances etc. Used stuff go to option 2...

2) Rent a uhaul (or friends truck) and take it to a transfer station, combine with other people in the building, friends, combine a pile of junk and/or use the van to get new stuff like Ikea or a new motorcycle... (to lower rental cost impact). if it is a city transfer station they may not (last time I used a city one they did not) charge under a certain weight. If it is private one you always pay but cash goes a long way price wise at these. Private ones have better hours. Many times there is a uhaul near the transfer station as well...

3) Call any of the 1-800 guys that take away junk, again pay for the convenience.

In your other thread about the meaning of life...sometimes just flowing with the system reduces stress and therefore results in an overall happier life. Sure it (may) cost a few $s more but why stress about it. Fighting the system, well that just adds stress and is it worth it in this case??? Your problem in this case has been completely solved, you just pay a little for the solution.

I know all this well, lived in a condo for a long time, still do some of the above at my house... in the end fighting the system may also be more expensive time and $$$s wise.

Oh I solved this a long time ago.

Admittedly your method makes more sense...but I got away with dumping the bed straight into the recycling room. Later on I took apart my fiancee's closest and put the pieces in the recycling room too. I noticed the sheets for "no large items or electronics" are gone. Perhaps a bunch of us started throwing large items in there and now they're forced to pay for it lol
