What's going on there now, why, and why isn't something being done about it?

What exactly is going on there, please enlighten us??? I am sure it is not the greatest place but I think the world has much bigger problems today...

Or are you still angry about the fall of Apartheid? If so, dude that was so early 1990s.

Why would anyone stay? After nearly five decades of official institutional racism/oppression (and well over 100 years unofficial) there are going to be some bad things happening in retribution, sad to see it is still going on. Hell look at the US, still problems there and that "officially" ended in the ~50s (Jim Crow Laws). Oddly many people still think that kind of oppression will result in something better here.

138/100,000 people murder rate is very high. Given some US cities have approached 100 is the last decade, it is not much of a leap of faith that certain sub areas in the city exceed 138 (and why live there as well). Still why stay? Having married into a farming family I know they consider "the land" some kind of birthright, stupid, stupid, stupid. Sell for what you can and leave.

People don't want to wait forever particularly when they have been taken advantage of for generations. Throw in poor education and you get violence.

In Ontario we just get a few roads shut down from time to time due to unresolved First Nation problems.

The South African attacks are disturbing in that the nature of the violence indicates hatred. If you just want stuff you kill people and take what you want. Is South Africa still promoting tourism and wanting to do a cover-up?

Madela's gift to south africa was not unlike Gandi's gift to India, or Jamaica's independence , its been 50 yrs of backwardism. Group sex on buses, not all participents having a nice time, machete attacks on property owners, girls having babies with uncle-daddy.

South Africa is a mess. If you want out you better have family willing to bail you out of there, property values are in the crapper and businesses based there are hard to sell.

This was inevitable and it's the reason whites did not want to give up apartheid and white rule in South Africa. That country will inevitably go the way of Zimbabwe. The whites will leave, a dictator will seize power, and the place will collapse into corruption and anarchy. There are no successful countries in Africa. The people in those countries will blame anyone but themselves, then come to our country and blame everyone else all over again for the high crime, unemployment, drug abuse and corruption. Whites in SA need to ditch the fantasy and leave for Oz, Canada, U.S. or Great Britain.

Thats a bit harsh. The population in most of these countries has some pretty recent history of being royally ****ed over by various colonists at some point or another, and we're not talking internet scams or something like that, more like literally life, death or slavery. It's not really any surprise that many of the countries have crazy current situations exploited by dictators military or otherwise.

I remember many many years ago bumping into a bunch of (white) South African mercenaries in a bar, they were not very nice people at all. I left them when they started singing some odd songs and doing Hitler salutes.

It's a mess. We have a small sales office with 2 guys in Johannesburg.

If you are a normal Person, black or white, you are living in a gated community with private security.

In the past 15 years the education system has collapsed, as the government can't supply classroom space and school administrators are looting what's left in the budget. School principal and administrator positions are so lucrative they are being bought and sold. As a result there is now a generation of kids that are completely uneducated, giving way to groups of thugs running the streets.

The economy is on a downward spiral. Granted it's still better than other parts of Africa like sub Sahara, Nigeria, etc., but GDP is declining exponentially.

All the old tribal divisions have raised their heads again. Black Economic Empowerment has lead to particular ethenic groups like the Xhosa (Mandela's tribe) becoming wealthy while Most others starve

There is lots or corruption in government, police, unions, etc. Land reform has resulted in a huge decline in food production. South Africa was once self sustaining. Now most of their food in imported.

There are parts doing well. The Cape Town area is booming, but that is controlled by the DA, not the ANC. There is a movement to break off from the rest of South Africa

Our sales manager Jon Jon who is Basotho once told me things were better under Apartheid. He got a good education from the state, had abundant food and security Now he either has to pay for a private school for his kids, otherwise they won't get one. It's interesting that his 2 oldest kids are working in India.

It's rapidly turning into another Zimbabwe.

Each of the African countries has been left with a stable, elected British, French or Dutch system of government. After the empires left each of those countries gradually devolved into anarchy, corruption and civil war. That is what will happen in SA. I know the Boers were thugs and oppressors. But that's been gone for 20 years now. They had reconciliation commissions that went on for years. It seemed to go well for awhile but it is now gradually falling apart. You can make all the excuses you want, but the opportunity to build a great country was there and they're throwing it away. Racial divisions are being exploited, blacks are being encouraged to attack whites, once they're gone it will the the Zulus vs Swasi vs Tsongo tribes - we've heard it all before. You can't go on blaming someone else forever, especially when you were given the tools to solve the problem.

No, stable and acceptable if you're a minority white. Not so acceptable if you continually see you're being screwed over and you happen to be in the majority. As for what is happening right now, you're right. There is a chance to build great nations because of massive natural resources or tourism. Unfortunately, there's more than enough tin pot dictators who don't give a flying **** about that and the west happily props many of them up with massive arms contracts.

Good luck trying to talk sense in him, lol

Could this be Canada in 2035?

You can give people all the goods and rights you want but without REALITY education it ends up wasted. Outsiders get tired of seeing their efforts wasted.

Reality education means that there is no free lunch.

Rights come with responsibilities and deficits cost money.

You can give a person tools but if they don't know how to use them they go to waste. Give an uneducated person a piece of land and a bag of seeds. They eat the seeds and then starve.

Whether you are talking about SA blacks or Canadian Aboriginals the problem stems from centuries old ignorance of human nature.

You can't take a person who's family has been treated like dogs for centuries, just give him a bath, suit and briefcase and expect him to be a successful businessman.

However you could take that same individual, give him a bath, uniform and gun and he will be a successful soldier. Without the uniform he will be a thug and without the gun a successful welfare bum.

A brain that has been crushed for centuries doesn't just re-boot in a minute or two and see the virtues of honest labour especially when seeing the ethics of big business.

I really think that a benevolent dictatorship has a lot of merit but only as long as it doesn't tell me what to do. Hypocrisy font.
