Was out yesterday afternoon and saw someone riding their motorcycle, North York area. Is it just me, but it sure seemed too cold yesterday to be out riding. I kinda felt more sorry for the motorcycle than the rider, the motorcycle had no choice in the matter.

should call motorcycle social services next time, there is no reason why a motorcycle should endure something like that, thank god for our government stepping in and taking away motorcycles from abusive homes and irresponsible owners

This time of year you can insure a 'busa for like $3 a week. Be crazy not to ride.

So long as the rider has the skills to properly navigate any sand/salt residue on the roads, and keeps the hard tires (potentally less than ideal traction) in mind, the motorcycle couldn't have cared less.

I'm reminded of a thread from back in November/December where there was all sorts of wild claims about valves snapping and basically destroying your engine by riding in anything less than warm weather.

Just to be the devil's advocate: when it comes to riding a motorcycle in cold temperatures, the exposure to the cold that the rider is experiencing is no different than the exposure experienced while skiing or snowmobiling. Proper equipment takes care of that. And also I am a firm believer that mechanically, a motorcycle is more robust than a snowblower. If the pavement is dry, why not?

A few years back I did ride and ski the same afternoon, but lately I have a tendency to leave the riding for the warmer months.

In case of nuclear war, you need to keep your winter riding skills up to snuff. You'll never escape Toronto in a car.

It's amazing! Petro powered machines working during sub freezing conditions.

I marvel at them every time I see them!

How do they do it? It's remarkable.

Do snow machines get blessed by Jack Frost ? How about those two wheeled machines out on the ice?

It's crazy yo!

The EMP will take out everything this side of a Lada Niva. Anything with any computer or CDI will be dead in the water.
Look for something with "points" or an old diesel. (As an aside; China has a weapon that will deliver a atomic blast sized EMP without a nuclear blast. US is FREAKED and is quickly and quietly trying to EMP harden everything they own).

Anyone old enough will remember Toronto Police Services motorcycle cops were year round. They'd just slap a side car on and go out and bust drifts. I've been told it was great fun.

I saw a guy on Cathraw road heading north. Looked like he just picked up a brand new bike and was riding it home.

I didn't call the police on him.

Oh yeah - foot clutch, hand shifter and NO brakes !
They were likely a whole lot safer with the chair on than without.
Often wondered what they carried in the sidecar to keep the wheel down.

During my brief time growing up in T.O. , our nieghbors son was a motorcycle cop, the side car had some pylons, flares, an emergency blanket, pretty much what goes in a police car trunk. They never traveled that fast so flying the sidecar wasn't likely a concern.
Anybody know why they stopped using them? they still have horses....

I saw a couple of motorcycle cops parked near a funeral home one time. They were on escort duty and waiting for the service to end.
I asked them what they used for weight in the sidecar.
One of them pulled back the cover. There were 2 sand bags in it.

I used to ride whenever I got the chance as long as there wasn't snow/ice on the ground. Coldest being a 20 min commute in -13. I know a few that would ride regardless of road/weather conditions on ADV bikes.

Just had to change riding behavior to suit the weather conditions and be properly dressed. I had heated gloves, heated vest, double layered socks under boots, neck warmer, and jeans under textile pants which had an extra lining which kept me warm.

FWIW, the bike did not blow up.

Did that until I got a car and decided I'd rather be comfortable while commuting.

I test drove a 1987 Nissan Patrol a couple of years ago. When you turned it off and took out the key the engine continued to run. It then had a manual lever you had to pull to choke off the air intake and stall the engine. Also had the handbrake on the driveshaft. And you could remove the roof to make it a convertible. Weird truck.

Police horses and dogs are technically officers, IIRC. That means they pay union dues and work to rule by pooping a lot. City councilors don't want to clean that up, so the animals stay.

Was it a triumph Daytona 675? I have spotted one, chilling on sidewalk of Fairview Mall. Very pretty looking bike.

Yesterday, roads were clear though. Sure it was cold, but it was not that bad. I rather be in my toasty warm car though.

There's a person with an FZ-07 that works in the bank at St. Clair & O'Connor who's ridden off and on most of the winter.
Hard core, good on ya !!!

+1 best of both worlds and beats a 26 passenger microwave oven any day. This is not a Nazi reference btw.
