You assume there was a "career" to begin with as opposed to just a job.

Opportunity cost.

My line of thinking is simple. If my wife put her job or career on hold and raises our kids for 15 years while I work and make job/career advancements, then its reasonable to pay her support in order for her to maintain a similar lifestyle.

15 years is a friggin lifetime when it comes to work. Fact.

You are usually on point but man...your reply is like a new rider destined for a hell of a tank slapper and highside...

Hehe. I appreciate that and respect your opinion. Just old-fashioned I guess. Been married for 17 years now and not once has any of the litigious nonsense being bantered about here ever been any sort of issue in my marriage.

Best thing that ever happened to me.

I'm in my early 50's and on my third career, surely 3 years is plenty to start one

Ugh. START a career... whereas you had 15 years to GROW one.

Seriously you can't comprehend this??? Just leave like you were planning to ;)

Single dudes and old divorced guys tend to look down on marriage, its not surprising.

Im happy. My wife's parents are still together, as our mine, as are all of their friends. I suppose its the circles you keep!

see bold item above...funny how that phrase is selectively used to bully men into things.

Let me ask you this, she goes and takes the USED condom and a turkey baster and gets herself pregnant...Did you agree to that?
Isn't that a form of rape???

Why have surgery? You are not locked into this person for life. Maybe after 1 year of knowing and living with her you find out she was a felon, or current drug user, or current porn star or heavy gambler with no credit and in the hole for a lot of $$$
See how that does not work....btw same for women, they should not have to get surgery unless they want to.

She entered into a verbal contract when she went on the pill...coming off or missing the pill voids the contract on her end.

*yes there is a real case of that by a prominent woman doing that to her husband (can't recall now, inreb might know)

Well smart men take precautions, dumb ones cry victim. Rock stars, pro athletes etc. don't just leave the used condom laying around for its contents to be used like this. Take it with you or flush it (city might not like that one too much, oh well). If you really don't want kids use the damn thing even if she is on the pill. Really not rocket science, and it is better then crying victim "whhhaaaaaaaahhhhh we had a verbal contract". All about decisions and not being STUPID.

To flip it, if a SMART women really does not want kids do you think she would be OK with the guy just using a condom, that can fail or could have holes poked into it. The smart ones will also take their own precautions (pill), why shouldn't a smart guy do the same?

Lots of dumb people is the problem (both male and female).

When it comes to money (and no kids), why enter into a one sided contract, maybe marry someone that has an education and a solid career and makes their own money, then IF everything is split in half no one gets hosed. Better than a bimbo/mimbo that looks good for now but is an empty shell out for your money? Even with kids the child support costs for the guy will be small if she is making good money, in many cases (friends I know going through divorce recently and now) practically zero if you have joint custody.

If you have a job marry someone with a job, if you have a career marry someone with a career. Cut out the stay at home mom stuff and she can keep her career. Even in the short term when child care costs almost as much as she makes.

last bit of my time I'll waste replying to you,
must really be frustrating for you to go around being smarter than everyone like that,
not leaving the thread, just gonna disengage from you

I don't know why you're so angry.. Im just offering up a reasonable counter argument. Don't get so pissy.

The law is (loosely) made for this scenario:

You get married, lets say at 25. You have a few kids. Your wife stays at home, takes care of the kids and the house while you work.

15 years passes. You've had those years to grow your job/career. She's had those years to help enable your growth by raising the kids and taking care of the house. Then you get divorced.

She can't POSSIBLY make up for 15 years worth of unemployment in just 3 years.

Not only that, lets say she can get right back into her career right where she left off. She will be back at that original pay grade and will have missed out on all those years of pay raises and promotions. BTW, the same can happen to the man it is just much less likely they will be stay at home dads, although I know a few that decided to do so because the wife is the bread winner.

Better yet skip the stay at home parent crap and have both parents keep their career.

this.....

and if it don't work out and you end up splitting, it ain't the husbands responsibility to top up
her pay because of societal inequalities, let some other dude do that, and if she can't get one,
her dad can do it

I guess before women could vote most laws favoured men. And as we know man, especially the white male, is a nasty piece of work. Top of the food chain by hook and by crook. Once woman voted, it was leftardy social programs for everybody paid for by the nasty white male. And the divorce laws changed because bad man.

Such is life in a 'democracy'

Plenty of ex-pats in the UAE and Saudi Arabia. Women are dirt there. Catch a flight ;)

To the OP, you just found out this? It's old news already.

The question I posed is not relevant to what you are stating imo.
You are stating a personal view where as we are discussing legal positions/actions that are not EQUAL on the back end.

As for mmmmnaked saying his wife sacrificed her body to have kids....uhm did you tie her down to the bed and force her to have kidS (plural)???

As for my other point about 6 months what you think is and what reality is are 2 different things.
Watch how I get $50k from you for merely taking legal action against you.
I have a lawyer send you papers stating will sue you for xxx for $250k (part of your pension...oh you guys forgot that angle)...and then I say if you settle the matters for $100k...by the time you realize paying your lawyer $400-800/hr with a $5k+ retainer...whamo, you soon do that guy thing of risk/rewards and your lawyer will come back and tell you just pay them $50k and be done with it as legal fees will run you close to that by the time you are done.

I am not going to debate with you on a subject you are being evasive with.
Wonder why the divorce rate is 55%- 60%+

As for the condom and kids thing...watch this one...you do all that (flush it) and one day she says she is pregnant....how many of you know 100% that your kids are yours...ooooh

It's not necessary to talk like that.

The poll has 1 yes to marriage. So that's tracking nicely:rolleyes: Divorce rate @55%-60% w/e doesn't account for "it's cheaper to keep her" and general malaise. How many good happy marriages with fully functioning kids?

Your 6 months thing is a fallacy. I already quoted the law. If there are no children in play, the Ontario Family Law Act does not recognize any support obligations until you have lived with a person in a conjugal relationship for 3 years. Post #37.

My wife and I made the choice to have kids, together. Just as we chose, together, to get married. All I see in this thread are a bunch of beta-males whining about some supposed inequality when nobody is putting a gun to their heads to get married. Hey guess what? If you think its unfair, don't friggin do it. The laws on the books have absolute merit and are reasonable. As with all things in life, there will be exceptions and cases where the man unfairly gets shafted - in this case he should've picked a better girl to marry.

You're an adult - behave like one.
