Newmarket collision threatens Bradford motorcyclist's ability to walk

A Bradford motorcyclist was put into a medically induced coma following a serious collision in Newmarket Wednesday morning, his distraught step-mother says.

“He has been induced in coma to keep him stable,” Angel Gavin said in an email Wednesday night.

“He will be in surgery most of the night. If all goes well, he will be able to walk again.”

Jaime Gavin, 37, was transported to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto after being taken to Newmarket’s Southlake Regional Health Centre following the collision between a motorcycle and a pickup truck at Hwy. 9 and Bathurst Street at about 6:15 a.m.

By Thursday morning, Jaime had come through surgery and was being kept sedated, Gavin said.

“His aorta has been damaged in the accident," Gavin said in an email Thursday morning. "The left knee was reconstructed, as it was shattered. The lower leg bone was protruding from his skin. It was fixed.

“He has more surgeries to come from that as well," she continued. "His hip ball was broke on half. They repaired that. In 10 years, he will need hip replacement. He will need to (do) lots of physio in order to walk again."

The family believes wearing a helmet saved Jaime's life, although “he’s not out of the woods yet”.

“It scares us what his life will be like going forwar," Gavin said. "The doctors told us 10 years ago this would have been a death sentence."

The intersection where the collision occurred is risky, especially for motorcyclists, she said.

“That intersection is terribly dangerous; so many frustrated people due to the amount of traffic. He is the most cautious motorcyclist I know,” she said.

“He took the (motorcycle safety) course; he changed the route he takes to and from work because of motorists not watching out for him.”

The collision happened when a black Dodge pickup truck northbound on Bathurst made a left-hand turn onto Hwy. 9, York Regional Polie Const. Laura Nicolle said.

The truck struck the southbound motorcycle and was then hit by a third vehicle, she said.

The driver of the third vehicle was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Nicolle said.

The driver of the pickup truck, a 27-year-old man from Newmarket, has been charged with making an unsafe turn, she said.

I occasionally ride through there. Didn't realise how bad that intersection was.

GWS Jaime.
