riding the Appalachians

Getting down to the Dragon at least once is a goal. If I give it a week, is that enough time? Is this the best route? If anyone's ridden the Appalachians, I'd appreciate any advice...

1 week is enough time but if you add a day or two, you will be able to see more and take your time. You could easily do the trip in 2-3 days getting down there, 2 days riding the dragon area and then 2-3 days return trip.

The blue ridge parkway is awesome and I think it's better to do it from south to north so the sun is always on your back and not in your eyes.

Here's some info for you:http://www.gtamotorcycle.com/vbforum/showthread.php?178018-Ride-Report-Smoky-Mountains

Looks to be a good route. And I agree a week is enough to appreciate it. I just came back from a similar trip from Toronto to Birmingham, AL. I especially loved Hwy 11 north of Roanoke, VA. Counter to shanekingsley, my issue with the Blue Ridge Parkway was not sun in my eyes, but fog all around. Direction of travel made no difference to us.

If you have the time, get off the main roads and really enjoy the mountain roads. I took 4.5 days to get down to the tail last year and the highlight of the trip was actually the incredible back roads of West Virginia from Blackwater Falls south to the NC border through the GW and Jefferson Nat'l Forests. The BRP is nice, but in many places you can take the back roads and actually get into the scenery that you are only riding past on the Parkway.
