20 Yrs Old, M1 license Need Help!

Hello there! I am currently 20 yrs. old, just got my M1 License and about to purchase my first bike(CBR300). I live downtown and I just need help about the insurance. I read a lot of threads here about the insurance for M1 license holders and there was not really a clear answer. I read about people having insurance for 8000 a year to 2000 a year for M1 and I dont get it. I wanna know if how much it is really for a newbie rider like me with no driving experience! Will the safety course help with the insurance? It's kinda pricey lol. What are my options? Do i really have to wait til i get my M2? How will I pass my M2 if I dont ride! as you can see i am new to this. Thanks A lot!!!!

Call for quotes. Can always pay for college course learn and take M1 exit at the end. Usually a much cheaper option than riding with a M1. I am guessing insurance is going to be tough even with a M2.

Take the course.

It will help your insurance rates and what you learn there can very well save your life some day.

As for "give me an exact number", that's impossible - something as simple as your postal code can make insurance costs vary wildly so the only way to find out for sure is to call around. Do NOT purchase the bike until you've got an amicable figure that you can afford to pay.

Taking a course makes a large difference. Your postal code makes a large difference, insurance living in toronto is going to be high, especially for a motorcycle, since your chances of a collision etc is much higher there and the reported ones are a lot more.
Your young age doesn't help, getting insurance on a M1 doesn't help.

I had a bike after i got my M1, did not insure or ride it till i took my M2 course and passed.

Even after all that, I respect that you went with a 300 to start, instead of running out and buying a 1000SS or something like that before you even got on a bike and learned to handle it.

You know who would know how much your insurance will be? An insurance company or broker. Call them to and get a quote. It will be 100% more accurate than a bunch of people guessing on a forum. They don't even charge for it! Yet.

If you think a safety course is pricey you might as well give up now. Take one. Learn from it. It WILL reduce your insurance rate.

I suggest you get your M2 once you can (60 days-90days after M1). Even if you know you can't get a bike yet. I am 20 as well and just bought a R3 because I got a decent rate. I got my M1 3 years ago and did my M2 with RTI 60 days after. Been holding onto M2 license since then and will be doing my M next week.

Congratulations! It's hard to be so patient. Good on you!

According to the Insurance companies you are high risk so you need to reduce the preceived risks by taking the Rider Training Course, choosing a ride that is not on this list (below)

and then keep your riding/driving record clear for the next year.

You'll need to call around to see what it will cost you -- Insurance is very personal, so no two people will be quoted the same or even near the same. Choosing something like the CBR300R is a great choice both as a learner's bike and also to keep costs down. The rest will factor in, based on age, postal code, years of experience driving a car, G or learners, any tickets in past 3 years, any accidents in the last 6 years, if you are insuring anything else along with the bike (eg. a car, condo, house, etc).

Assuming you are squeaky clean in terms of past history, driving for a few years, and under 25, any quote under $5000 would likely be reasonable. Know too it should drop dramatically in either year 2 or 3, once they determine you aren't a significant threat to yourself or their bottom line. Also always talk to or email a real living and breathing person...online quote generators are notoriously bad. I can use TD's system to generate a quote for me around $4000-8000, but if i call them, I'll get back a number in the $1200-2000 range. Never understood that one, as it technically can drive business away from them or any company that employs it.

EDIT: Just read your post again and if you are 20 with zero history (as in, you never held any license and literally just got your G1M1), then expect very very high rates for a few years. Right now you are a huge red flag for anyone as you have no history, and while you might be the epitome of a perfect driver...you could also kill yourself in the first kilometre and take out a bunch of pedestrians with you. Only comparison I can give you was a friend who started riding around 18 or 19 with zero history. He bought a CBR125R and I think was paying around $5000-6000/year, at least for first year.

*DO NOT BUY A SUPERSPORT

Original was too long and this is the gist of what he meant.

LoL Whut?
When I was 18, at an at-fault in a car on my record and improper stop at a stop sign ticket, I was quoted $3500 (1 payment) for a cbr125..

$5000-$6000 seems like a bit of a stretch...

Considering I'm helping a 19 year old with no history with buying a ninja 250, he was quoted $163/mo with SF...

When I was 21 (last year) I paid 1600/ yr for my Ninja 300. Now at 22 with my M2 I'm 1900/yr for my FZ-09. Both through State Farm with no collision.

If that's true, your signature lies!

Last year... Ninja 300.. This year, FZ-09... Where does the 2015 CBR600RR come into play? lol

Lol I've been playing musical bikes! First I bought the Ninja 300 last March. Then I bought the CBR last August. Purchased the FZ in May of this year, just sold the CBR last week. Down to one bike again!

cbr300 is good choice, dont buy the bike though

As others said, Take the course, once have M2, call everyone for quotes, THEN buy bike.
