RIDER CHARGED AFTER MOTORCYCLE OBSERVED DRIVING CARELESSLY
A rider has been charged after an officer spotted a motorcycle travelling at a high rate of speed and alerted the York Regional Police helicopter Air2, which followed the suspect until he ended up at a residence.

On Friday, June 17, 2016, shortly before 1 a.m., an officer observed a motorcycle driving carelessly in the area of Normandale Road in the City of Markham. The officer lost sight of the motorcycle due to its high speed. Air2 was called to the area and located the motorcycle travelling at a high rate of speed northbound on McCowan Road north of Major Mackenzie Drive. Air2 followed the motorcycle as it drove around Markham, proceeding through a red light at the intersection of Elgin Mills Road and Highway 48. The rider passed a police vehicle and was followed by Air2 to a residence in the area of Raymerville Drive and Cairns Drive. The rider parked the bike on the road and ran into a house. A short time later officers made contact with the rider in the residence. He was charged with numerous offences, his driver’s licence was suspended for seven days and the motorcycle was impounded for seven days.

York Regional Police is releasing video from Air2 to illustrate the dangers of operating a motorcycle at high speeds and to remind riders of the potential charges they may face when caught by police. The video is available for viewing at the following link: https://youtu.be/UBuAJtKCvGY

Charged:
• 26-year-old man from the City of Markham

Charges:
• Stunt Driving
• Careless Driving
• Operate Motor Vehicle No Insurance
• Drive Motor Vehicle Improper Licence
• Red Light – Fail to Stop
• Use Plate Not Authorized

A video of Constable Andy Pattenden speaking about this incident is available for viewing at the following link: https://youtu.be/_prefNActR8

Excessive speed has consistently been a contributing factor in many serious and fatal collisions that occur on our roads. Drivers who travel at excessive speeds or engage in street racing, put themselves and others at risk of death or serious injury when they choose to disobey traffic laws and disregard public safety. York Regional Police is committed to enforcing traffic laws and making our roads safer.

Call 9-1-1 if you see dangerous driving practices that could cause personal injury or loss of life. When contacting police, try to note the vehicle’s location, direction of travel, make, model, licence plate number and driver’s description.

Is it true that if you notice the chopper following you, the best place to go is the airport or are you pretty much S.O.L?

The airport can be the best place to go, but only if you have a fully-fueled plane warmed up and waiting for you on the tarmac.

Idiots! You live in an area where they HAVE helicopters, duh, what do you think is going to happen.

They follow you from the air and mark your house then send the GPS coordinates to cruiser.

But it demonstrates with the law and insurance being what it is...for the most part they will run.

The text says he was initially spotted by a cruiser.
If he had simply pulled over then he would have had a fine of a few hundred dollars.
Now he faces fines in the thousands, possible jail time, the cost of a lawyer and an insurance bill equal to his mortgage payments.

Possible criminal charges etc. A lot if ramifications like employment and travel.

Operate Motor Vehicle No Insurance
Drive Motor Vehicle Improper Licence
Use Plate Not Authorized

Not so sure. No license, no plate, no insurance. Probably would've been towed no?

He would have been screwed if he did stop... Mistakenly thought he could run and not get caught.

Life as it should be.

They're making it so hard for the average shlub to ride a motorcycle these days they're practically cornered into this type of scenario. Don't think so? Think again. And here's the kicker for this guy, he's at the age where his brain is just maturing, barring any drug use - minus a couple years for that - so he's got one foot in prefeminist manspace and the other in reality as determined by cause and effect. Back in the day we used to say one foot on a banana peel and the other in the gravy. From the little light this bit of news intel gleans I'm guessing, strongly, that home ownership is not in this lads future.

Life as it should be.

If that makes you feel good, roll with it. It's awesome to just mill about waiting for these little shadenfruede drops, innit?

Great minds think alike ;)

I would think that an underground parking garage would be a better bet, especially if it has exits to a shopping mall. Dude had no insurance, no license and was using stolen plates (if I read the above correctly...); its likely the bike was stolen too. If he bailed in a garage his main enemy would be security cameras and possible forensics (e.g. fingerprints on the bike, helmet etc) if the po-po would go to that extent for these crimes...

You make the bed you lie in. This guy made his bed.

Fortunately only he will have to lie in that bed, unlike another man who was involuntarily forced to share a bed made by a motorcyclist of similar mindset in Burlington not so long ago.

For this specific instance, since he didn't have a class M license and from the video, couldn't ride slowly without dragging his feet, I would say there was much more risk of him crashing while running (vs more experienced riders) and potentially impacting innocent persons sharing the road. YRP did a righteous job on this one.

This

Seriously Griff2, why do you spend so much time trolling police sites looking for examples of motorcyclists doing bad things, or getting hurt or killed? Yeah, we know there are stupid people out there. What's the point of constantly bringing it up on a motorcycle friendly web site. Live & let live. Better yet, its sunny out. Why don't you go for a ride. Just don't come back and complain if you get passed by a few bikes (I am of course assuming that you would never ever go over the posted speed limit).

^^^ Will this still apply when you're up on assault charges for deliberately ramming another motorist; maybe we'll post your Facebook so we can all sit around debating how you got this way
