Master cylinder question

With my mc cap off if I hit the break lever hard, I can make some of the brake fluid jump up and out of the reservoir. Is this normal or does this mean there is air on the line?

Normal.

If there is air you will have increase travel or a spongy feel

you prob have this style of master...the splash or jump only happens if you bang on the lever hard. Its normal
