I know this is New Jersey, but it isn't too far out of the wheelhouse to happen here in the big smoke.

TL;DR - $50 fines for people that text and walk across roadways.

This would be like shooting fish in a barrel at any intersections near a university, downtown especially.
seems reasonable
I watched this girl walk down Yonge/Dundas holding her new iphone in front of her face facetime/skyping with no regard for her surroundings, earphone in of course to hear.

actually if it is illegal to text while in a car on the ROADWAY because the driver/person is distracted from the road then it makes sense that someone walking on the ROADWAY is committing the same offense.

Should be a slightly higher fine IMO.

Also, I posted this in the BDoO thread:

Goofs like this should get a 300 dollar fine.

Not exactly the same offense. Yes both are distracted, and I'm in favour of a pedestrian fine. However as a distracted driver you're more endangering others whereas a pedestrian is more endangering themselves.

It would never be enforced though, and an unenforced law may as well not exist. Police already ignore jaywalkers and red light running cyclists. They'd probably say the work isn't worth the $50.

On the one hand, I would have no problem with something like this here. OTOH, all the jaywalkers I come across in the core are already at maximum casual indifference to motor traffic, and I can't remember any of them using a phone.

Goofs like this should get a free bumper tattoo.

I think someone texting was hit by a right turning dump truck, at Front and Blue Jays way a while back.

I seen a funny video of a guy walking downtown and texting, he walked in to a small newspaper dispenser and squared him self ;(

There was talk recently of allowing municipalities to lower in-town speed limits to 40kph because of this nonsense.

Except if someone walks into something texting and walking, they're likely only going to hurt themselves, possibly fall down, and look like an idiot.

Not the same.

Oh yeah, this is definitely happening here - and soon. Commie Ontario would not ever miss a chance to pass another nanny-state law to protect people from themselves. People just cannot be trusted to make their own decisions and live with the consequences. Plus it brings in revenue and gives our bone-idle police something to do.

30 kph I thought.

Not if you walk into a moving vehicle. Of course this person had the green light, and wasn't texting. http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/200...le_loss_says_family_of_struck_pedestrian.html

Fair enough, but that crosses into Karma at that point.

But going back to someone else's comments earlier in the thread, this will be another pointless law that goes 100% unenforced even if they were so stupid as to try to enact it. For the most part the police don't bother with rolling stops, people who don't maintain lane discipline in turns, moderate speeding, jaywalking, failing to signal, driving in incorrect lanes, not to mention the hundreds of other pointless or simply wholly unenforced laws on the books, so they can add this one to the books if they want but it seems like more fluff that will simply be ignored.

And they cause the driver to swerve to avoid them or cause the driver to slam on the brakes (green light) causing a chain reaction from braking or swerving.
What about the trauma inflicted on a motorist for hitting a pedestrian? The biggest fear imo as a driver is hitting a pedestrian.

i would be more in favour of banning stupid people from suing others when the dummy is largely to blame for their misfortune.
