There are 10 year old threads about this on www.radardetector.net. The reality is that most of the radar gun self-tests were not meant as a replacement for proper calibration. The self-tests only let the user know if the gun is functioning properly, but it doesn't actually test the gun's calibration. A competently calibrated gun is accurate to within 8mph as set out in the Supreme Court of Canada ruling many years ago. However, if the gun has not been calibrated, it could be all over the map. One guy got his case in Caledon thrown out by proving the OPP didn't calibrate their guns. Tuning forks are the only way to accurately test a gun's calibration. I'm not surprised by the CBC article.
