how difficult is it to remove a stick on tank protector?

something like googone, some fishing line and heat gun/blow dryer. Slow and steady, and any sticker comes off, with virtually no (minimal?) damage to the paint.
 
Use a hairdryer on high instead of a heat gun, heat gun may be too hot and damage the paint
 
If it was on before you bought the bike, it might be covering up existing damage.
 
Also if you remove it, the paint will likely be a different shade due to less sun exposure...just a FYI.
 
If the tank is steel body shops have inductive heaters that only heat the steel under the moldings and they peel off.

Heat + gas tank = New bike when you get out of the burn unit. Use appropriate safety measures.
