Dear potheads, Merry Christmas!

I was told today they will be taxing another 10% per gram. So with HST that's $12.30 a gram? How do they expect this to combat any part of the black market with prices like that? My delivery lady brings me a selection of 5 or 6 strains for $50 a quarter, delivered to my door the same day.

It's not about the black market. They could not care less about that. It's about getting tax money to balance those massive deficits they keep incurring. What will kill the black market is home growers.

I laughed at the 10 dollars per gram, add another tax and you may loose sales.great price you get brother ;)

Just got my 2017 Cannabis Advent Calendar in the mail :) might have to open one early..... Got mine from Budmail

Very long winded article, summary....drug companies look out for their and their shareholders' best interests (not yours) and are capitalists... Being capitalists they (some of their previous leaders) see growth and money to be made with the changes to the pot laws.

I guess being for or against depends on one's views on capitalism and the challenges it can bring. Same article can be written about the oil, alcohol, coal, tobacco, automotive, agriculture/food,....industries.

I can see why it might get the socialists here wound up. Cries for bigger government and more regulations in our lives to save us...

I have no idea why they didn’t just decriminalize pot instead of putting up this stupid fog about medicinal usage and trying to establish preferred suppliers. If the intention was to get rid of organized crime it’s spectacularly backfired.

Organized crime never just goes away because of lost business, they go into new (or expand old) businesses to make up for the lost ones (diversification).... Given a little time they will be out of pot and will double down on opioids or the next whatever.

Ending prohibition didn't put the "mob" out of business. They took a $$$s hit and expanded into other areas. This will be the same thing.

Government approved $300+ 28g
Black market $100 28g
Let the games begin.

That's what all those fentanyl laced street drugs ads that have been popping up is supposed to take care of.

Scare tactics to make people buy from the government.

They could have put out those ads when the fentanyl crisis started in 2016, but they chose to start pushing those out with pot legalization around the corner.

The quality difference is the kicker though IMO. The concentrates and flower from "most" dispensaries are miles above what you will get from joe shmoe on the street. The bigger growers actually test their stuff to give legitimate THC and cannabinoid ratios, and keep track of the strains so you have proper options when you are looking for specific effects/tastes/smells.

Random stuff you buy from family/friends/streets could be anything. You have no idea what is was grown with, how it was flushed, what strain or strength it is, and of course the chance of something else added in. I think that is enough to push a lot of people towards the legal side. I'm cheap as hell and I gladly pay 250/oz for AAAA grade stuff.

About to crack open some Godzilla and Misty Morning shatter right now. To space!

Mind you I'm not getting mine from Joe Shmo... But I know what's in the stuff I get, where it came from, how it's grown, etc...
I don't follow the government weed program that close as I have zero intention of ever buying government weed... But wasn't there talk of limiting the THC levels in recreational weed?
And.... All of the legal growers, except one, have been caught using banned chemicals.

It was huge news a couple weeks ago^^

Also does anyone use THC atomizer sprays under the tongue? How do you like them? I was thinking of getting one to help with my sleeping as it is discreet. I'm getting mixed reviews from them though.

I like how it's absorbed directly into the blood from under the tongue making it less stronger than an edible alternative that is processed through the liver. Only takes 10 minutes to kick in as opposed to 30-60 mins from an edible.

Anyone have first hand experience?

Dispensaries sell "street" weed LP's sell Health Canada approved weed not that the HC weed is any safer by any means. Several LP's have been caught with residue from a fungicide called eagle 20. Eagle 20's active ingredient is myclobutanil safe for food products but produces cyanide when burnt.
Health Canada says that is not a problem.

Yes. The 3 largest LPs were caught last year, CGC, ACB and OGI with that banned herbicide. All issued recalls and all took a brief stock hit for it.

As for black market, sure, this new regulated and taxed recreational scheme will have little initial impact on that.

But there is huge market to be gained from people that will try weed again, or for the first time.

Think suburban folks 40 or over. They have no clue how/where to get underground weed. But many of then will line up at an authorized retailer. The rest will follow eventually as economy of scale and better quality/consistency squeeze out the private dealer.

When I think suburban folks 40 and over, I think they'll try it, and just end up popping a couple seeds in their garden and watching it grow. Later improving their skills to grow better weed by figuring nutrients, pH levels, medium, trimming, drying, curing, cloning, etc.

If you have land, and it's legal, it's a no-brainer.
Buy a gram for $10+tax, or buy a seed at a super-inflated price of $10/seed to grow an unlimited amount where there are no questions on what's in it.

I'd think younger, middle-aged people living in urban areas will end up going to the shops (or their previous BM dealer) for the sake of convenience and inability to grow things.

I don't know man
2 people working full time chasing kids

Don't think they'll have much time for that

Kinda like brew your own beer
You can get good at that
And it saves a few $

But I don't know anyone that has tried it
And stuck with it

Too much hastle

Growing your own
and having consistency
I imagine is harder than beer

It's really relative to the person's hobbies.

I mean, if someone were into gardening to begin with, it's easy to adapt to an additional plant.
If someone has time to blaze instead of watching their kids, they have time to put a seed in the ground and water it every couple days (or if it's in their outdoor garden, every once in a while if it doesn't rain).

Consistency is the only issue (depending on effort and time put in), however, evidently it has been an issue with licensed growers as well with pesticides and fungicides used in mass growing.

People I know didn't stick with it because of the hassle of trying to hide it due to the legalities behind it. Nobody wants the risk of getting caught with production of a Schedule II substance carrying huge fines/jail-time.
