Get out there ....it's gorgeous out

I just learned today that I cannot commute via motorcycle anymore, on account of having to carry a really heavy laptop to work everyday.

Damn, I was looking forward to getting my last few rides in this week :(

It's a company issued Dell Precision M6600 - doesn't fit into 90% of standard laptop bags; you need a special one for this behemoth.

Not to mention that I wouldn't feel great about having it on the bike itself due to vibrations, so I'd have to wear it. I also don't have any tank or tail bags ATM. A backpack was usually perfect for me to carry shoes, a shirt and lunch for the last 6 years of commuting.

le sigh

Can't you just leave the laptop at work?

I'm riding all week. Couldn't today as I had chores but I could hear all the bikes out and about

Leave shoes at work....take laptop into backpack. Problem solved!

I have a backpack at the office just in case I ever need to ride with the laptop home...it sucks but it's a small price to pay for a short ride.

Pelican case. Leave pelican at home.

Leave shoes at work as suggested. Buy lunch if possible, wear wrinkle free shirt.

The $ you save from parking & gas offsets buying lunch

Tires are toast otherwise I would've been out. Crap thing is my new tires were delivered to the shop a week ago but the shop couldn't schedule a tire change for me until tomorrow. Hopefully I can catch some of this decent weather before it passes.

Yesterday was perfect riding weather. Took a short ride across Hockley, then up through Mansfield, Terra Nova and Hornings Mills on my way home after leaving work at 1pm. To the two riders who I waved past on River Road, I hope I did not slow you guys down too much coming down 2nd Line East.

Going out for a quick ride this morning before work and then tomorrow I think I'll do the same scenic route on my way home.

Lots of crashes here this morning, was freezing overnight.

Looks like the early people forgot to account for black ice, wet leaves, and the just plain orneriness of the weather.

I'll get out, but probably after it's above 10.

Haha you guys are awesome

Can't you just leave the laptop at work?

I was trying to figure out a way to do that yesterday, without it being an inconvenience to my client; I've usually worked out of head office for the past 3 years, and it's been wonderful. They recently changed my role and asked me to work at the actual client site -hence the laptop- which happened right as the weather got cold, so it wasn't TOO bad. I don't even have a "permanent" desk here, so I can't leave anything behind :(

I work in the 'burbs tho, so parking is free :)

16 on the dial and rising. Go time.

21C !!!!! riders are reporting at the Forks...many many riders...I'm overdressed - big time

Seriously? Get a slightly bigger backpack? It's company issued so why the heck do you care about vibrations damaging it? Even then, vibrations should do nothing. I haul my M4600 all over the place and have even put it in checked luggage and it was fine. Hauled it all over the Yukon in the back of a pickup truck while offroading and it's been fine going on 3 years now. Tiny planes up to Nunavut and NWT were good, too. Put my last 3 company laptops through the same abuse and other than some markings on the screen from them being squished into luggage (which causes them to flex and the keyboards rub on the screen a bit) they survived fine. Heck, the one I'm typing on right now (HP ProBook) got snowed on last winter while installing a weather system in Wrigley, NWT. On that trip I found out that a laptop can actually overheat if it gets too cold (this one was at below -10C).

I've had 9 desktops literally bouncing around the back of my SUV for 4 days now and I'm sure they'll all be fine. Computers aren't made of porcelain.

There's actually two laptops in this set up along with a desktop hard drive:

Big pack, little bike. Sounds like a porn

Still 21C! Awesome. I've been commuting all season, so I'm luvin' it. Next week's forecast looks rideable too. Keep your fingers crossed and we might get all of November.

I bought this backpack from MEC and have been impressed. It has an elevated pocket against your back for a laptop. The pocket is elevated so that the laptop doesn't hit the ground when you put the bag down. Comfortable and works well. Just an option.
