Hey all
I’m going to take a long weekend soon.
I’m thinking around Sept 17-18-19-20
If the weather isn’t going to cooperate I can always change the dates.
I realize this isn’t optimal for fall colors but regardless need take a long weekend
These 15 hour work days are starting to get old.
Anyways I’m looking at the following.
Leave Thursday afternoon and head to Petersburg WV for 2 nights.
(I’m currently in Wilmington Delaware)
I found a great little mom and pop place there.
Friday do the following route
https://goo.gl/Fch4wi
Spend the night in Petersburg again then Saturday do this route
https://goo.gl/yDLQmV
Spend the night in Cumberland then Sunday just blaze home.
I did some of this last year but wanted to explore it more.
The Blackwater Falls area looks promising.
Is there anything I’m missing?
Ice cream shops that are a must?
Hot dog / burger stands worth checking out?
Maybe a lake with pick nick tables like Hungry Mother State Park?
Did I plan my route on gravel roads?
Any great places to have breakfast / diner?

Thanks in advance.

Make sure you get a meal at the historic mansion - the food is just fabulous but hours are odd. Talk about old....1710 I think.

The history in the area is just phenomenal

Are you going up to the top of Spruce Knob? - the highest point in WV and a really nice ride to the top with awesome views up top and along the way.

Thanks Mac....I remember that thread well.
i will use some of the info from there.

Looks like there may be a PA run for me starting noon tomorrow depending on how busy and staff levels. Exercise the new NT.

Looks okay - I won't be far from it tomorrow at State College if I go.

You have 120 north of you coming off 144 and then come down 220 for a long ways if you are not slabbing down.

What about 250 east of Monterey and 33 east of 28?
In Petersburg, Saucy's Walk Up is a must for bbq. The Brickhouse Run is also good.
In Cumberland, I like The Crabby Pig and Ristorante Ottaviani. If you go to Crabby Pig, you can park under the bridge, but do not park on old brick...they will give you a fine! If you use Garmin navi...strange things will happen in Cumberland... Don't waste your time trying to find The Crabby Pig( or other restaurants) in residential neighbourhood...it's on the other side of town, just go downtown and ask locals.
On your way home, take PA 26 north from Maryland state line, if you never been on it.

Thanks for all the response guys....it really helps.
Shane....ya I tried to go up it in the fall last year but with rain and leaves I didn't make it to the top.
I'll definitely gut up there this time.
Mac....I'm working is Delaware so I'll just slab to Petersburg.
Koval...thanks so much....I'm always looking for a good place to eat and will definitely check all of these places out
(I'm going to Petersburg WV not Pertersburg VA) :)
I did 33 last year and didn't like it much....I found it a bit too busy for me.
but I'll check out the rest.

Keep these ideas coming :)

Well I made it down here last night.
It was easier to just blazed down from Delaware to here...made the trip in about 5 hours.
I'm in Petersburg WV and will go with the maps above for today and tomorrow.
I was an uneventful trip here other than lunch.
I stopped and had Five Guys for the first time ever...dam fine burger
I'll try to post some pics.

That one pic up there^^^^ is country fried bacon with maple syrup dip.
Freeking brilliant.

Hey all.
So Im back.
It was a great trip.
Here is what i did Saturday
https://goo.gl/Fch4wi
Here is what I did Sunday….
https://goo.gl/yDLQmV
I stayed basically to this route.
I ran into problem with my gps this trip.
When I made the route I was sure that I planned it to stay off gravel roads if possible.
But unfortunately I wasn’t careful enough and I ran into a couple of really tough ones on both days.
Also the gps didn’t like these routes because of it settings (not doing gravel roads)
It wasn’t hard to change…just wanted to stay with the route I had picked.
Perfect example is Saturday’s route.
From the motel to the top of Spruce Knob I picked a great route.
I love Smoke Hole Rd…It’s a real treat but so are the roads I picked after it.
After I got to the top of Spruce Knob I tried to go down the other side.
I had to turn back however because the road was just too rough.
I then made my way to Blackwater Falls.
It’s a great little park but unfortunately there wasn’t much rain this year so the falls is more of a trickle than anything.
After the falls I made my way up to Cumberland.
My plan was to stay the night here but it was still pretty early in the day so I said screw it and blazed back to Wilmington DE.
I love riding in the Petersburg area.
The roads are in great shape and there’s some fine countryside and the views are spectacular.
The colors haven’t really started yet.
There we some light yellow spots but for the most part everything is still pretty green.
Like I said I love Smoke Hole Rd and give Shane credit for finding it.
I did it north to south this year.
It wasn’t a great day when I did it last fall and this time it was perfect.
I left early in the morning and ran into all kinds of guys hunting with their dogs.
Saw 6 deer and a ridiculous amount of squirrels.
Things are starting to fall from the trees like chestnuts and such.
I saw one tree close to the road that was a beautiful red….I soon discovered that the leaves did not change color and that in fact this was an apple tree with all kinds of apples on the road….yikes!
I don’t know if will make it down there again this year but if a nice weekend comes my way I just might try.
Here are some pics

This one and the next look pretty fine unless that tropical storm moves north.

Nice ride Kiley. How was that section of WV72 just north of Red Creek? I have read that it is quite narrow and so gravel from the shoulders is often kicked up and onto the roads from cars. It looks pretty nice and I want to check it out if it is very good, but not at the expense of riding on a sloppy road.

Hey Shane.
I didnt get to do it and I'm angry at myself for not trying.
This was just after trying to climb ove Spruce Knob.
Spruce Knob is paved all the way up but not on the other side so I had to come back down and go around and somehow missed 72.
Guess this gives me good reason to go back.
I do love where i stayed however....great little mom and pop :)

Thanks - If I had known you were going to go down Spruce Knob the other way, I would have advised you against it. I had asked about it on another forum and they advised me to go up the paved way and down the way you did, because it was an awesome gravel road - maybe not the best for your kind of bike:(
Glad to see you made it to the top of Spruce Knob - It's a really beautiful ride if you ever get up there again during peak fall colours.

Ya i blame myself for that one.
I'm normally pretty careful about that kind of thing.
my bike definitely isn't designed for that.
At least i was able to make my way around it.
I am seriously thinking of doing a similar route Oct 2-3-4 wkd.
There's so much to see in that area.
Plus I can get there in about 4-5 hours :)
