why are you running those pod filters?
 
The bike had been in storage for a while and I picked it up for virtually nothing as it appears.... He had already added the pods and apparently re-jetted the carbs which were a mess...

Great bike I had and 82 xj I forget which one but a bigger cc.. It hauled ass!!!

Check out xjbikes.com, I have been riding an xj650 maxim for 2 and a half years until last week when I bought a klr. Anyways, xjbikes.com literally has all the info you could need on resurrecting and maintaining an Xj. The gurus there really know their stuff

+1 for xjbikes. When I used to own a XJ750 that was a very helpful community.
 
Diaphragm type carbs need still air to work properly, (air box) that's the first thing I would change-back to stock.
