[HOV Lanes] The aftermath

Let me just leave this here again

I never said for them not to do the other part of their job not related to the HTA.

Indeed difficult to discuss these things in forums like many other things.

Baby steps, baby steps.

First you GTA'ers need to learn to drive/ride within only one lane.

Only then, can we work on getting you to choose the correct one.

Oct 2017 that is...

No kidding ... nice steady employment for >2 years ... LOL ... mind boggling. After all of that it will be just still Gardiner (hopefully not crumbling and killing anyone.).

I don't think I'll ever see that in my lifetime. Riding/driving in the gta is the biggest clusterfuck in canadia

I will dare to correct you .... GTA definitely has an infamous lead in whole of North America, and I would bet my loonie that they are not doing "too badly" world wide in the negative sense of rating ... as far as developed world. Let's say top G20 countries. You will be hard pressed to find worse/less efficient traffic system in that pool.

It's not the the driving skill, the whole system is absolutely messed up.

Think I must've turned that off somehow because Waze never sends me to the 407.

Are the HOV lanes left on the 401 still in affect? The diamonds and weird dotted line are still there but no signage and as far as I could tell yesterday not a single person in it had more than one person in the vehicle.

Temp HOV ended August 18th.

Try driving in the Boston area, or Montreal, or Vancouver. TO is no better/worse than any other major city in North America, with the quantified exceptions of Brampton and Markham, which are just kill zones.

Instead of pissing away billions on games no one cares about, the Ontario government should be running PSAs to re-educate and educate drivers.
Most people think "slower traffic keep right" is a suggestion, and most think that if they do the speed limit, they are ok in the passing lane, and in the right lane, you can do 75-80 on the 400s.
Also, people stop on the side of a live highway for the stupidest reasons. i.e. kid dropped his candy bar.
Well over 90% of side view mirrors are not properly adjusted, so people take up most of their mirror view with their car doors, then everybody just accepts that cars have "blind spots". "SMIDSY..you were in my blind spot."
Then there's the clowns who hang all sorts of dream catchers on their rear views, or those family profile stick figures in the back window of the minivans. Amazing what is still legal.

But that's weekends, weekdays, it's entitled dooshbags in rented German cars, hubbing out of South Oakville.

The problem is that when I say "enforce"...

...

...and don't get me started on our F&$#IN@ politicians

...

There, fixed it.

That is true. "Enforce" does carry a certain presumption of ticketing. However, I could have sworn it was not the official responsibility of any police service to administer driver education & licensing. That's the government's job through the MTO. It's certainly easy to blame cops though, and inevitably it always seems the police services are saddled with it.

Road rage is a serious issue in today's culture, but where did it all come from? As you stated, it's a social/cultural thing. How many hats must cops wear? Are cops to be therapists and leaders in cultural change? Policing certainly has changed. People want to take less responsibility for actions - blame everyone else - and weirdly the cops keep going along with it - wearing more hats.

As for your last comment I left quoted: It's just not that simple. There is so much more to it, and they certainly are not bringing money back to the department. It's money that goes back to the government - money the government wants and demands of the Chief, who demands of his subordinates, who demand of their subordinates all the way down to the PCs on the road juggling the often many pending radio calls for service and meeting their own work performance objectives/metrics. Just like any other employee/employer relationship.

I guess somewhere in their day we expect them to address the most important, most pressing issue of the vast majority of Canadian life - TRAFFIC and the HTA! Indeed, 101% of Canadians drive and are affected by traffic, road rage, tickets and the lack of policing it - right?!? Only .01% of Canadians are affected by Robberies, Murder, Assaults, Fraud, etc.. you know.. all that less important crap that ties up police resources. Yes, cops should be serving and protecting, and I thought that's what they did. Unfortunately everyone is too selfish to realize that their road-rage free, non-left lane bandit drive is not the bees knees and priority #1 for police. But, everyone expects police to just somehow solve the issue rather than looking to themselves or elsewhere for a solution.

I suppose we could pay more taxes so more cops can be hired to tackle Canada's biggest problem.

Anyways... it's not easy never easy to debate such topics via forums..

Traffic police does not catch rapists. They deal with vehicles. And how they deal with them is by writing a huge amount of speeding tickets which does nothing, aside from filling up the city coffers. If they focused on unsafe lane changes, running the red light, not signalling turns, etc. - that would be more helpful. The problem is, half of them drive that way themselves. So much for leading by example.

I will agree that people absolutely refuse to take any responsibility for their actions. ... And I'm not a big fan of our licensing process either.

Basically, everyone is to blame, including cops, government and the drivers.

In Toronto, TPS centralized the Traffic Unit to focus on vehicles. They deal with vehicles in many ways that keep them preoccupied. What about running around Toronto going to all the PD and PI accidents that are called in. Don't forget calls to service for driving complaints & possible impaired drivers - not to mention the real impaired drivers. All the RIDE programs they set up too, and escorting they do (funerals, etc.)

I'd venture to suggest that any 60## cop car you see set up on a speed trap is directed to do so by their boss as their specific task for the day. You should stop and ask the officer if he is having fun, or if he'd rather be doing something more productive (in their view) with the time.

Indeed, not one single person or body of people are to blame. We all have a part.

"...and escorting they do (funerals, etc.)"

Always had a problem with that. Should be about the last thing police is doing. Rich dead people don't need escorting.

I only know 2 cops. One in Australia and one is CSI. However, I can only react to what I see. And what I see is speed traps everywhere. Statistically, speeding tickets are the vast majority of those being issued. Whether it's the cop's chief or the cop - I don't care. End result is that they are making money instead of making the roads safer.

Nevertheless, the biggest travesty in my eyes is allowing people to ride on streets after writing a written test (M1). That should end.

As for HOV, I use QEW most often and it's basically back to normal. Lots of left lane hogs, right lane moves faster 50% of the time. However, at least the highway actually moves. Before 18th it was unusable for most of the day.

Rich dead people don't need escorting. This is correct. Perhaps it's a paid duty? Perhaps the Funeral Company's insurance demands a police escort when their conga-line gets to a certain length.

....and I know where you're trying to say, but we most certainly can and should react to more than what we just see. Once and a while people need to be quiet; listen; think, (maybe even read & educate themselves). After that then react. Nearly nothing in this world is as simple and black & white as it often appears.

Exactly Funeral escorts are paid duty assignments paid for by the Funeral home, (So essentially the family itself pays for the escort), it isn't tax dollars being used.

BEST Description I've read! :hello1:

Maybe we could have police only do, I dunno "police work" like most people think they should do. And then for traffic enforcement, have a different regime to take care of that. Let's call them hall monitors, The Royal Order of Canadian Hall Monitrs. They can wear green or brown corduroy as uniform with broken glasses and a neon whistle and print random tickets for whatever pisses them off.

This would more clearly delineate cool cops from the loser monitors.

Anyway, I cruised in at 6:30 this morning at 90+ in the right lanes 401/DVP. Left lanes were at a standstill.
