Tail of the Dragon to Toronto

Me and a close friend are planning a trip down to the tail of the dragon in september.

Going down is no issue, we are actually heading straight to Savannah, GA in one day (doing the iron butt), and following that, in around Atlanta for the walking dead tour.

But going home, we are planning on hitting the blue ridge parkway and the all famous Tail of the Dragon.

But my knowledge of that area is somewhat limited. I am very firmiliar with I75 (practically grew up on that interstate), but I am looking to stay off the major interstate, especially in around the mountains.

Any suggestions on what route you would take north of the Dragon leading northerly towards either buffalo, or Detroit (ugh)?.

Lots of options on the way back. You could take the BRP to Ashville and on to Little Switzerland, do 226 226A loop then 221 over to Boone. Then take 421 over to Shady Valley then follow the twisty roads to Marion VA. Then VA 16 to Tazewell and then continue on WV 16 to Beckley through the New River Area then 20 and other roads up to PA 26 to 144 and then onto Buffalo. Look for very detailed ride reports by Shane Kingsley.

The last few years I've done Deals Gap to Rich Creek VA via the BRP for the most part, then US219 home the next day. This year I did US221 to Rich Creek and rode another 3 hours up US219 to to Elkins VA, then the rest of 219 home the next day.

How long are you willing to spend on your trip home from the Dragon area and what kinds of bikes are you riding? There are scenic routes you could take or twisty routes.

219 is a fantastic road reviewed in pretty well all motorized magazines .

After heading straight down via the interstate a few years, Splitting the ride into two days via US219 and the blue ridge or any twisty route is definitely more fun. And yeah 219 is nice, the farther south the better it get's.

I actually didn't like the 219 at all well at least not north of WV, there are much better routes back north.

I'm planning a trip down there and just put these routes together which have some nice roads:
Day 5: https://goo.gl/maps/KtEI2 - Ironhorse to Willville via Blue Ridge and more, 10hrs/572km
Day 6: https://goo.gl/maps/v3GdO - Willville to Somerset PA via WV 250, 33, Smoke Hole, 11hrs/800km
Day 7: https://goo.gl/maps/3PFWX - Somerset PA to Home via PA144, Kettle Creek and Coudersport 8hrs/650km

Oh Shane.....you always have the best routes :)
Oh and I'm loving this Poor Farmers Market idea.

Why not 3 down, 2 there, 3 back?
that first day would be close to 1400kms for me, think I'd be ruined for the rest of the week lol

No problem. 1st day mostly highway and then nothing but backroads after. We'll keep the days around 1000km max for highway or 700km of twisty stuff. It's easy for me to redo the routes. Just let me know if you get the days off work ad are good to go.

Cool I'll let you know.
Why those dates Shane?
Why not the week 21-25 or 28-2.
Gives us an extra day If we run into any snags and only have to take 5 days off instead of 6 from work with the 2 weekends in there.
