The Bad Drivers of Ontario Thread

I never said others should have stopped, I stated, nobody else stopped and nobody witnessing the whole situation nearby offered to help.

I was just surprised that out of the 15+ people around at the time of the crash, not one would offer help. Thus making my point about why anyone would help others in need in response to "In the good old days, someone would stop and help push".

I felt that I had nothing to offer, just simple assistance in whatever way I could.

Immediately after a hard collision, nobody knows the condition of the occupants, so quickly jumping to "I'm not getting involved because there's nothing to help with" is just an excuse when there is nobody around helping especially if you're already just standing by waiting for a bus that would get stuck in the 2 blocked lanes anyway.

By saying, "I never said you shouldn't have stopped to help", you're implying I should have stopped, but by going with your analogy, I should have kept driving because I simply didn't have much to offer.
I'm not implying anything. That's the point, the decision is up to individuals based on the information the have (or lack) at the time.

From your description of events, I probably would have stopped to help if I were in your shoes (because the extent of the problem was still unknown), and I probably would have done nothing if I were standing at the bus stop (because I would have seen that the situation was under control). The reason for the different levels of perception probably comes down to urgency and perspective. Being involved in the situation increases the sense of urgency to react, and at the same time your sight lines would have been more obstructed so would have had less info to work with before jumping out. There's also the issue of the safety of the scene (until people start to get out of their cars who knows if they might start moving again).

To bring it back to that video of the cop pushing the car and getting no help, my only concern (from my perspective through the camera lens) would have been for the cop's safety and I might have looked for an opportunity to block traffic with my car if I were in a position to do so. Otherwise I would have driven on. Perhaps from a wider angle we could have seen people blocking the lane he was in. I wouldn't run across traffic myself to help him push, because that only adds a new hazard.

Bottom line is it's easy to criticize the action or inaction of others, but when everything works out for the best then what exactly are we complaining about?

It doesn't mean stop dead when you have 50m to merge

That's for the driver to decide, not the guy behind him. If the driver's not sure it's safe he HAS TO slow down to the point of coming to a complete stop if necessary. Whether or not your judgement is better that the guy's at the wheel is irrelevant. It's 100% his call to make, and everyone else has to be prepared for it and allow for it.

You have to really watch your speed down at that end. It's usually a traffic mess, and the sidewalk crosses the road with no crosswalk or light, right before that car made the u-turn.

Beats me why cyclists think that they aren't bound by the "one way" signs. Signage pertains to vehicles, not just motor vehicles. Bicycles are vehicles.

Don't you know? Bicycles these days come with shields similar to Star Trek...renders them impervious to anything that could hit them...well, at least in Toronto....

Guessing you weren't in the car (parking mode)? I'm pretty anal about my paintwork, so if anyone did that while I was sitting it in the car there'd be hell to pay...

Whenever a clueless biker gets hit, they cry pedestrian.
