Re: Oh the irony

Which was not the case in this incident.

There was a third. Second shouldn't have entered until the first was clear to go.
There wasn't a cage timing the light the other way either, which would have ruined their day real fast.

People here complain all the time about how left turners at intersections are one of the biggest problems for motorcycles, but don't give it a second thought, when they are the ones making the left turn.

Like I said before the police conditioned me to be wary of entering an intersection without a clear opening for turning.

Anyways, we should move this to a separate discussion of left turning etiquette.

Then others responded by quoting me and talking about a different unrelated analysis that had zero, zilch, nada to do with what I said, using it to discount my info. What a red herring fallacy. By all means add away another level of analysis to the overall discussion, however it has nothing to do with my single limited scope post and comment... and it make zero sense to quote me in it. And if I wanted to debate those additional analyses I would have quoted it in a preface to actual discussion, like normal people.

Your criticism could apply equally to you, since those you replied to had zero, zilch, nada to do with "victim blaming", only that he made a mistake by virtue of his relatively high speed compared to surrounding traffic. There's a difference between a making mistake and bearing responsibility for a crash, if the mistake isn't illegal.

So the discussion was already at that other level and you narrowed the scope down to the simple matter of liability. When people replied to you, it was to ensure the point wasn't lost about riders ultimately being responsible for our own safety regardless of legal right and wrong.

yup, a green light at intersections is one thing, what else might be going on there at the same time is another & can be more vital, best to always be mindful of both, particularity on a bike

look at & include the overall & bigger picture in all you do on the road,

ltd scope vs the big picture, no point or good reason in zipping thru a clogged intersection in the right lane in that deal, lotsa things can happen quick & one did,

bad driving habits often come to roost & there is a ton of it out there on the roads

the bigger problem is the getting away with it for a long time, then bad habits are ingrained & done routinely

it's about recognizing, managing & minimizing risks vs the opposite

oof. A little more to the right and he might have cleared her. Hard on the brake and he may have stopped. Definitely her fault and she should have stopped shorter. Looks like she had already committed to the turn before she saw him. Made a nice clean turn around that corner, and then ran out of room to maneuver. Hope he and the bike are o.k.

The fun part is I had a Toronto traffic cop cite me for making a left turn into the right lane. Got so far as trial, then I instructed the justice of the peace AND the cop why I turn into the right lane. And why even that isn't enough some times.
Cue racebaiting...she stopped, and her insurance will make him whole.

If she got smoked by the GIANT EFFING DUMP TRUCK...how many years would be spent defending his CDL all while she swears he ran a red and destroyed her favourite Lexus.

Gawd, I really REALLY hate Toronto.

It's illegal and dumb. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/glob...ight-turn-into-the-left-lane/article27292018/

Okay, but what if you’re making a right turn into the left lane [or vice versa] for a good reason?

Maybe you know that right lane is ending up ahead. Or it’s jammed with traffic. Or some jerk has parked his car there even though it’s rush hour.

Too bad, says Stibbe.

“You make the lane change after you complete the turn,” Stibbe says.

You previously cite totally legal behaviour as bad on this thread, now completely miss basic parts of this video in your assessment. The rider illegally turned into that outside lane putting him where he ended up. You are not helping your rep at all.

Some people ride for the thrill. Part of my riding criteria is to be safe and accident free. You may see the video and think, "there's nothing he could have done different, fate caught up with him". I like to learn from the situation. Otherwise, why even bother posting the videos. Everybody makes stupid mistakes, driver's mistakes can leave them with a dent, and you broken and twisted. Ride like no one else is going to look out for you, because some of them won't. Anyways, tear my rep apart all you want, but ride safe.

Edit: I stand by my assessment of piling three left turning vehicles into an intersection, and then trying to move them through quickly and safely on the red light, one into the wrong lane, as bad, if that's what you're talking about.

Maybe it was just me being annoying but I really feel when your that far away from the yellow light you should begin braking..

Happens far too often in Hamilton. They've got nowhere to go, but have to get there fast.

As for people talking about 3 bikes in the intersection. 3 bikes can take up about as much space as a car, or truck at least. Especially when they're riding together/in a group.

Would go for both of them. Did anyone see a reason for stopping in the passing lane there? No signal and took too long to be moving left or right. Still wrong to run into the back of someone, but I try and be predictable when on the road. If I'm in the passing lane, then I'm passing, not stopping.

Oof, took his foot off of the brake, once he was in.
