Has anyone rented a bike in Malta?

Yeah from what I hear you might find yourself under a bus.

But please report back here what you find out. My parents are from Malta and when I visit I'd like to ride there too.

Will do. I found a couple places that rent bikes, will suss it out when I'm there. Riding in Gozo may be better.

Tools wouldn't be bad either

Considering the surprising amount of Maltese immigrants in Toronto, if you can ride here, Valletta shouldn't be too big of a surprise. Think of all the lousy drivers here concentrated into one small island. My relatives are a little too familiar with the license review board, if you get my drift.

My dad just came back from Malta and he was complaining a bit about the drivers there.

I'd think living in Brampton and Mississauga for over 30 years he'd be used to anything. LOL

One of the challenges with Malta, you have 450,000 people in a country about the size of Lake Simcoe. its a dense population and most locals have never driven anywhere else except around the goldfish bowl that is Malta. Traffic rules are "guideline". Id ride there, scooters are very popular so two wheelers aren't unusual.

Well, I've been here here a few days and was ready to rent a bike to check out Gozo, but after already seeing horrible driving, I couldn't do it.
Yesterday there was a dignatary in Valletta with the motorcade, Maltese police motorcycle escorts and the whole bit and one of the motorcyle escorts get hit by a car! My gf was not too happy about that, so that kind of killed that idea. There have also been a few fatalities lately. My gf is Maltese and her family discouraged it too. So in short, I wimped out ;)

That's too bad....but probably better for your health.

Did you get prices or find out what the requirements are to rent a bike/scooter?

Sorry, I did'nt get any prices. Was a little rushed with the ferry to and from Gozo and hooking up with the "hop on, hop off bus". I was not going to rent a bike on the mainland. i doubt you'd need anything for a scooter, but likely a motorcycle licence for a bike.
Really enjoying our time here regardless.

I've never been to Malta but from what I've heard, the scooter and the moped are the most common forms of transportation.

I was sharing this topic with a friend of mine.
He told me a story about driving in Malta from the 1950s.
In those days Malta was still a British colony and had a large Royal Navy base.
An admiral was sent from England to take over the base. He brought his Jaguar with him.
In the 5 years he was there, he never got it out of second gear.
