Nailed for driving on shoulder 401 Westney

Isn't the shoulder space there for a reason? If all the shoulder space is plugged up by regular folk wouldn't that space not be there anymore?
If everyone drove on the shoulder, then the regular lanes would be wide open, so I'm cool with that.

Not uncommon, your looking at a bike coming at you with some speed. Not much time to rwact should the vehicle swerve towards you. I would say it would be wrong had the officer drew his weapon. But placing your hand on the weapon is actually part of training for officer safety.
I thought the officer was asking a question at the time so no speed involved?

A highway shoulder serves several functions:

  1. It serves as a lateral support to the highway pavement.
  2. It provides a means of protecting the highway surface from the intrusion of water, one of the great destroyers of our highways.
  3. It serves as a safety feature by providing refuge room off the highway pavement surface for disabled vehicles and in emergencies for vehicles to avoid head on collisions by oncoming vehicles out of control.
  4. It provides a partial storage area for snow which we must remove from the pavement to provide the traveling public with an acceptable pavement at all times.
  5. A wide shoulder provides a temporary parking area for people who wish to stop and enjoy the scenic vistas so readily available throughout the state.
  6. Shoulders provide an auxiliary pavement for vehicles where the pavement is narrow. Many of our pavements have lanes 10 or 11 feet wide and some of them even narrower.

I've been caught in stop and go traffic before, on the QEW Westbound at rush hour. It's definitely ride-able. Nothing to get your panties in a knot about. Next time try another route with less traffic and more breathing space. I came back along the Lakeshore, and it was a much more pleasant ride.

How is riding on the shoulder "****ing everyone else"? You know you could use the shoulder, and even lane split in congested traffic without affecting a single person.

No I can't use the shoulder, it's illegal like lane splitting. I deal with the traffic like everyone else and wait. Just because I'm on a bike doesn't mean I'm special. If they had a special "motorcycle only" lane than yes you would be special and could use that however that lane doesn't exist and is not what the shoulder of the road is meant for. I commute in my truck because I hate sitting in traffic on a motorcycle especially in 30 deg heat and dealing with a holes on the roads (also don't ride street anymore). So because I could fit down the shoulder I might as well use it because it's not affecting anyone and my time is far more valuable than everyone else that's obeying the law and waiting.

I read the title of this thread and though it meant he got laid because of his bravery. I watch too much porn. Back to your argument.

Hah, if more dimwits drove on the shoulder, it would be clogged just like the regular lanes, possibly worse as they got flats from debris/asphalt edges. You roll the dice by using the shoulder, emergency or not. Knew a friend whose car started to overheat in a jam, so he pulled to the right and stopped. Coolant weeping everywhere, steam pouring out the hood--and was rewarded with a ticket. Apparently, not enough of an emergency.

I really doubt that.

I really doubt that.

Lol, do people lie online? I was riding shotgun, buddy pulling a trailer, got pulled for crap trailer/unsafe load and ticketed. Cop let us drive away. True.

Lol! That's believable, tell you it's unsafe, give you a ticket, let you leave with unsafe trailer... Too funny.

I was thinking about this thread while working on the cure for cancer. If you're going to debate the morality of riding on the shoulder, why not also consider the risks - I would prefer not to sweep up the remains of some contractor's unsecured bucket of roofing nails with my $400 set of tires

Life in the urban jungle comes with risks and rewards. Win some, lose some. Not for the faint of heart. CAA Plus.

^^^ This, exactly this. Let the self righteous ****** cast the first stone. If I have to choose between lane splitting (HTA 172) or riding the shoulder (HTA 150) to the shoulder I go. Everyone sitting in a car is free to buy a bike, and break the same (bull$#!T) law. I wish more did, it would make traffic lighter.

Curious to see how bad it's actually going to be during the PanAm games.

Or you could just sit and not get a 150 or 172. Everyone has places to be, and it seems everyone these days thinks they are more important than everyone else.

OP I drive that section of the 401 daily. They are there or just past where it narrows from 4 to 3 lanes, (where it now shifts due to the construction of the 407 bridges). They tend to be there 2 - 3 times per week. The shoulder as you know is about 2 lanes wide there so it is tempting. I have seen many "run it" so they can get in front of that ONE truck..lol. Definitely not the spot to tempt it. Plus as you now due to the lane reductions it is ALWAYS jambed up there.

I see the Go buses EVERY afternoon take the Westney off ramp, go down to the lights and the one lane goes straight thru back onto the on ramp and the GO buses use this as a "short cut" to get maybe 100 vehicles ahead of where they were in traffic. Better option than the shoulder ticket.
Im sure there I a sign there that states buses can do that, dont know why the exception though. But still a ticket for you, just not the bus.

I really should buy a short school bus for my second vehicle. Buses get so many exceptions.

It wouldn't be tempting to ride on the shoulder if lane splitting was legal here.

One of the reasons I stopped commuting on my motorbike was because of the lack of legal lane splitting; after living in Asia and getting used to riding there it became an exercise in frustration just sitting in traffic here.

(Coming from someone who got a small ticket for riding on the shoulder when he first got back to Canada.)

I didn't say I was special, or that my time was more valuable. But, if I'm on the shoulder, and an emergency vehicle is behind me, it's a LOT easier to squeeze a bike between two cars than it is a pickup truck. Do you speed? How dare you do that crap? Do you think your time is more valuable than other peoples time? Under no circumstance should you do more than 100km/h in the left lane. Cause that's what the law says. Has it really never occurred to you that laws evolve and aren't perfect? As soon as they allow splitting/filtering, then no one will ride the shoulder, there won't be any benefit.

When I go to to the bank I just walk past everyone in line and go right up to the next available clerk.

I only have one simple transaction to make. Why should I have to wait in the same line as everyone else? They should be thankful that I'm not occupying space in their regular line.

True story.

Difference is that now others have to wait because of you. You sitting in traffic, and someone filtering past you has absolutely no effect on the time you arrive at home. You being envious is not their fault.

All those vehemently against it, have you ever downloaded a movie/show/song/software/etc? Those actually do impact the lives of others. I'm guessing there's a lot of self-righteous hypocrites here.

Last question, you just ate at burrito boyz, and are sitting in a huge jam while wearing your new custom dainese leathers. You also just heard that the jam will take hours to clear up. Do you sit there with explosive diarrhea and soil your $2000 leathers, or make your way through the jam?
