Indiana's "Religious Freedom Law"... Okay now to discriminate?

jesus what now?

Fortunately, it appears that this law has caused enough backlash that they are going to have to do something about it pronto.

The law of unintended consequences strikes again ... this time, with the result of the exact opposite of what the law was presumably meant to protect.

“So, with that said, what ‘compelling interest’ would the state of Indiana have to prohibit me from using marijuana as part of my religious practice?” he asked. ” I would argue marijuana is less dangerous than alcohol and wine used in religious ceremonies. Marijuana isn’t any more ‘addictive’ than alcohol and wine is used in some religious ceremonies. And marijuana isn’t any more of a ‘gateway’ drug than the wine used in a religious ceremony will make you go out and buy hard liquor. (At least not on Sunday.)”

What the **** is going on down there?

OK so where does the line get drawn? In my previous post I used the F word and the system censored it. In Trash Talk it would be OK.

BTW this is not a criticism of GTAM or the mods but rather an example of censorship based on some moral belief that certain words are offensive. This traces back to various Judea / Christian decency codes.

SO what if you were a Bible thumping proof reader in Indiana and someone gave you a manuscript to correct? Can you refuse the job if it contained WHAT YOU defined as profanity?

A few years back a born again printer in Toronto got a hefty fine for refusing to print a homosexual publication. He argued that the client could get someone else to do the work but that smacks of Jim Crow laws.

Could that printer be forced to print the F word? GTAM doesn't have to.

Child porn is covered by law but could the same printer be forced to print adult porn?

Could a Jewish or Muslim butcher shop be forced to sell pork.

Does a restaurant that closes Sundays discriminate against atheists by denying them food?

Can a waitress be fired if she refuses to show more T & A.

It's a bit of a Catch 22. By enshrining the separation of church and state in laws one makes the church - state connection. Sort of like having a society that has a law against having laws.

I can see the intent of the legislation but also the frustration of definitions and the potential of misuse.

Under this law yes they can refuse based on the on both their morals or religious beliefs. They could also legally refuse any service to someone who is LGTBQ or none Christian
Under the old law they could still refuse to print certain material however they could not refuse to do business with someone because they are LGTBQ or none Christian

Could a Jewish or Muslim butcher shop be forced to sell pork.
Under the new law no but they can refuse to sell them any product based on their ethic heritage religion or even gender
Under the old law no

Under the new law defiantly not
under the old law no

New law does not cover employment i don't think sooo Yes
Under the old law Yes
However their might be other existing laws that protect this

Thanks for those.

I would think as a general guideline that an individual could discriminate in these things but not a company. If a person opened a business and didn't hire anyone outside of his immediate family (Spouse and kids) they could maybe have more say in refusing to provide certain services.

However once you start hiring off the street all of the anti-discrimination laws come into effect.

The legal profession supports both sides of the debate. Retainers please.

In Canada at least you can legally discriminate on hiring practises based on whats called bona fide occupational requirement so if you ran a Christian book store you can legally not hire none christians. However you cant refuse to serve none christians or Gays if you were so inclined.

Its a very silly law that will be shown to be silly when the Satanists get their law suit through.

But they won't throw gays off of 13 story buildings in Indiana.

Leviticus 20:13

If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them.

So hopefully they do not have any 13 story buildings...

California however http://www.npr.org/blogs/itsallpoli...-ballot-initiative-to-kills-gays-and-lesbians

The "Sodomite Suppression Act," as proposed, calls sodomy "a monstrous evil" that should be punishable "by bullets to the head or any other convenient method."

True colours.

I like reading...

Is it any surprise that this is a republican governor/state? The GOP is stupid and entertaining like Rob Ford was, but unfortunately they hold greater power and influence over greater numbers of people. Seriously, how does a nation wide group come up with the idiots they have?

As an atheist who thinks this mentality is barbaric and insane, id have to say that as long as they are not actively pursuing homosexuals to hunt them, its not completely insane to give them the right not to sell them a cake.

Democracy is not always getting what we like but getting what we like while other get what they want (without actively harming others). So if they sit in their shop and just dont serve cake to someone who they disagree with, let them be. Take your business to an open minded secular and sane busoness owner and let them benefit from your business inseatd of some caveman who thinks the world is 5000 years old!

Again, i personally am completeley agasint this religious outdated and indsne mentality but hey, id like to have the option to offer my services to some insane radical muslim/christan or ... who marries his/her daughter at 13 or beats her if she doesnt wear Hijab! i would absolutely love to have the right to not offer them my services.

As it stands, Apple, Angie's list and many other big businesses are boycotting Indiana because of it. It will backfire on them. Just grab your popcorn and enjoy.

Let the secular world florish on its own and leave the radical religious to go extinct in their little empty shops!

Do you realize that you are equating lgbt people to "insane radical muslim/christan or ... who marries his/her daughter at 13 or beats her if she doesnt wear Hijab"?

Would you also uphold business owners' "rights" not to serve/sell to non-whites? Either way, this is simply how people are born, not by "choice".

your plan to let the religious radicals go extinct might work if there weren't so many of them. You'd be creating 2 separate economies.

imo, someone's religious beliefs can not be allowed to interfere with basic human rights of others in our secular society. This includes being treated equally in the eyes of the law.
