Once you've been in the game for a longer period you will see what happens to older helmets. The interior foam degrades to the point where it starts to crumble with time. Soon you would have foam dandruff and decreased protection. Why would you want an older helmet to have this process start prematurely? You wouldn't. But if you replace your helmets semi regularly you won't have to worry about this in a helmet a few years old so go for it.
