Any old role playing gamers around here?

Is there anyone here who played RPGs and is old enough to remember things like "Mazes and Monsters" (a role that Tom Hanks should open his wrists over) and the old "a guy went into the sewers and killed himself because his character died" stories? Well the latter was born out of a one page comic, known as a "Chick Tract", that was produced by fundamentalist Christian Jack Chick back in the mid-1980s.

So along comes 2013 and a guy wins something like a thousand bucks in his State's lottery, and decides that he's going to make a movie. He's a gamer, from way back, and remembers the Chick Tracts. He gets the rights from Jack Chick to produce a movie based on the one page comic "Dark Dungeons", originally published back around 1985. He teams up with Zombie Orpheus Entertainment, who are well known for doing game based comedy movies and series. Then comes the twist; they play the whole thing completely straight up and true to the original source material, rather than mocking it. Trust me; if you're an old school gamer, it mocks itself well enough.

Why am I mentioning this? Because, right now, the movie is available for download for less than the price of a Timmie's coffee and muffin:

I used to roll dice with a nice AD&D (when D&D was owned by TSR, prior to WoTC) role playing group in Barrie. We never left basements, and never did any LARP. I'm not familiar with Chick Tracts or this movie, but I'll bookmark it for a rainy day and try to watch later.

This is the original comic, on Chick's website:

In making the movie they mined other tracts, his website, and forums in order to insure that they were making something that was true to the mindset. If they hadn't, the movie would have been about 2 minutes long

OK, I've moved this up to a "must watch" from a "rainy day maybe". My favourite episode of Community (great show!) was the one in which they played D&D.

The only episode I've ever watched

The way it should be! And who wants a Paladin around anyway? No fun is to be had with Lawful Good people around.

Ah, yes. Awful Good. Guys like Chick thought that D&D was teaching kids to worship demons, when it was really teaching them to be Fundies.

This is something else from some of the same folks who produced "Dark Dungeons." It's just a *bit* lighter :D

It was also largely shot in Guelph, last year, when some folks from Seattle and Vancouver came up to work with film makers from around here. They've released two of the three episodes so far. I've seen the whole thing and love it, but an even better three parter called "Natural One" will be released soon. It was shot at the same time and features a fight scene, that was shot in Kitchener City Hall.
