recommended base layer for colder rides?

Depends on what type of riding you do; some things may not work well for you look wise. I don't worry about layering when it becomes cold (below 8 degrees celsius) as I use cold weather jacket and pants from Scorpion. They are very warm, keep me dry inside and out, but are not cheap.
 
I bought the top and bottom from my initial post. I paid full price for them. $10 off certainly helps
 
wow u guys really go all out..... I use walmart underamour ( Everlast )long sleeve and long pants a turtleneck track pants riding pants, a neck warmer.. and I'm toasty warm and it didn't cost that much.

That Wal-Mart stuff works to trap the heat in, then wear more layers on top of that. Multiple thin layers work better than 1 thick layer.
