Holy brutal crash! I hope the police officer and driver of the car are both OK.

I'm curious as to why this accident happened. Why was the bike travelling in that lane? I think the car driver didn't see the bike, as it was in a blind spot of a van. Driver assumed his lane would be clear, but their was a passing vehicle?

Again, I hope everyone is ok as that's a bad crash. I like to understand the events that lead to the crash, to hopefully learn something from this event.

Sounds like everyone will be ok in the end.... Dang, they use VFR1200s as police bikes there?

It sounds they were hustling... so bike rider may have just come too close to the car.

Having done escorts, (in a cruiser), for several heads of state and other VIP's the motorcade always travels at a pretty good pace. This is often for security reasons.

The officer may have entered the wrong lane to "block traffic" from entering the roadway from the side street, (again a common practice fr a motorcade).

Don't ask me for the reasons these things are done. Simple answer is when your assigned the detail your told what route what speeds are to be used and any other tactics to be employed, (this info is normally given during the pre assignment briefing less than 10 minutes, before the detail begins).

Decimis: the most important thing to learn from this collision... Stay away from motorcades..lol

I was in downtown montreal when a william and kate motorcade rolled through. Sheer volume of associated vehicles necessitated using more than their share of the road (probably 50 bikes and 10 suvs/cars). Main motorcade was probably doing ~70 km/h. A bike would block every intersection/driveway/parked vehicle with a driver and then once the motorcade passed, had to really hustle to get back to the front (probably 120+). Cool to watch, but I could see it going wrong quite easily.

Gotta love the media... make it seem like it had something to do with the Prince.

Prince Harry was caught up in a dramatic high-speed crash yesterday when one of his police outriders smashed head-on into a taxi as the royal’s motorcade headed to an official engagement.

Really? Prince Harry was in the nice comfort of his Range Rover while a police bike crashed head on into a car. The only thing he might have been caught up is his knickers in a bunch as he may be late for high tea. /rant on british "royalty".

how dare you mock the future king of Canada you unloyalist you!

They said that the motorist made a turn in front of the rider.

I will assume that the rider might have been moving to pass the convoy to get to the next intersection, and sometimes you become complacent on a police marked bike, with lights and hi vis clothing.

A report stated that the officer was discharged from the hospital while the driver was admitted and kept for treatment. I will assume for once that the cagers suffered the greater injury.

Talk about situational awareness! I wonder how this will affect the riders future habits and confidence?

in the video, it looks as if the car pulled out right in front of the motorcycle. maybe the motorcyclist swerved left into that lane to try and avoid the collision with the right turning car.

Yeah, it reads like he was riding the bike, luckily it was just a peasant.

Apologies if you've answered this before but what's the rationale for police motorcycle officers not wearing full gear? Half helmets I get (interaction with drivers, public, etc) but short sleeve shirts and no gloves?

Primarily because you never know when your getting off that bike directly into a foot chase which is hard to do fully geared up with a heavy jacket etc. Plus mobility if your involved in a scuffle with an offender or you have to get to any of your belt equipment, (taser, cuffs, gun), etc. Same rationale in the winter when officers wear short winter coats for access to equipment etc.

Well, many motorcycle police in Europe are properly geared in summer and don't have these issues.
As for the foot chase concern, you would think the force would deal with this with some minimal fitness requirement, again as with other countries' police forces.

in the UK and many other countries, full gear is std. Even in motorcades. The short sleeves etc is a Nth American thing

They should just put him in an old Hyundai with tinted windows, and stop at every light like the rest of us. Way safer.
