2003 Yamaha V Star 1100 turn signals

When I turn on either the left or right turn signal it turns itself off

For instance when I am in a row of traffic at a light and wanting to make a turn and waiting for more than a minute my turn signal will not stay on, it turns itself off automatically after a short period of time.
Or the same thing happens when I downshift from either 5th or 4th to 2nd or 1st

Has anyone experienced this on a 2003 yamaha v star 1100 classic

It could be turning off if the bike is leaning at all. Most Vstars have self cancelling signals.
