Lane positioning

This morning I was on the 427 and saw two biker cops riding in the same lane side by side. Is this sorta thing allowed if you were on a casual group ride or something?

If you're super buddies with the other rider then maybe. In groups with unknown others, it's probably not the best idea.

It's legal, just not really smart.
You cut your escape routes in half by riding like that.

Regardless of legality, it is a very bad idea, and it boggles my mind why the cops do that.

I do not want anyone sharing my lane.

Ontario's "Official Motorcycle Handbook" says, regarding Lane Sharing. "Motorcycles and other vehicles each need a full lane to operate safely. Motorcycle drivers should not share lanes with other vehicles." And, under "Driving in a group" says, "Never drive directly alongside another motorcycle."

I believe that somewhere in the HTA "sharing a lane" is illegal for any powered vehicle.

Why do police motorcyclists do it? Because they are trained that way when they practice doing motorcade escort and parade duties. And too often they come to grief doing that sort of riding.

During the training, we are taught only to pair up when passing through towns as a large group. Once we resume highway speed, we are to split into normal staggered riding position. When our guys ride in pairs on the highway it's just for show. Gotta build that massive ego somehow, right?

I guess if they want to live by a separate set of laws they can be judged by a separate method of justice as well.

Interesting as I have never seen 2 or more motorcycle cops riding staggered.
although I guarentee if they saw you doing that they would pull you over.

I cannot find anything online that says it is illegal, however, I was told during my motorcycle course that you should only be 2 abreast when at a stop light/sign.

I can't find anything prohibiting it either. I don't think I've ever read anything saying that it's illegal, whether it's smart or not is another thing.

From the days of "CHiPs"

I'm going to assume you're talking about s. 154:
154. (1) Where a highway has been divided into clearly marked lanes for traffic, (a) a vehicle shall be driven as nearly as may be practicable entirely within a single lane and shall not be moved from the lane until the driver has first ascertained that the movement can be made with safety;

There is no law that uses the term "lane splitting", which is why it falls under a blanket charge like Careless driving. Under some circumstances, ie. how the lane splitting is done and where, how fast etc. it could be seen as racing.

I may have found it:

ONTARIO REGULATION 455/07 RACES, CONTESTS AND STUNTS

3.4. Driving two or more motor vehicles side by side or in proximity to each other, where one of the motor vehicles occupies a lane of traffic or other portion of the highway intended for use by oncoming traffic for a period of time that is longer than is reasonably required to pass another motor vehicle.

That's the stunt definition, that implies that the vehicles are occupying the entire road. Note the part about the "other portion of the highway intended for use by oncoming traffic". That wouldn't apply to this situation.
