Quebec driver who stopped for ducks guilty in fatal crash

Im of two opinions on this, I think she is a moron for stopping to save some ducks on a damn highway. I have stopped to help animals, but not on a damn highway that is nuts. I do think she was rightly convicted, but I don't think her life should be over for it, I don't think jail time is the answer for this woman.

What she did was stupid, but it was not malicious. 10 years of community service would suffice, along with the guilt she will live with for the rest of her life.

agree

I also agree 100%, but how can anyone know for sure that she hasn't done this on purpose, or how do we know that no one will attempt to "save the ducks" because they (now) know that they can get away with murder without jailtime?

An act of kindness gone wrong. Some people like animals more than human animals and do not see the difference in the value of life of either. She should have argued this point in court. Native Americans share this view. Her punishment (if any), should be community service working with animals. A win-win for everyone. There was no malice here. Just a dumb chick trying to be kind to the world.

A very generous view and I might agree with that to a certain extent but would hate to sweep under the rug the important responsibilities associated with public motoring. Did she show regard for the dangers she created? Was she even aware of the dangers she created? Does it matter?

Besides, ducks apparently don't need help crossing a highway.

They really wasted a lot of time looking both ways.

so she is appealing the verdict......who would have thought.....

Quebec woman appealing conviction for deadly crash triggered by stop for ducks

The woman who triggered a deadly collision near Montreal when she stopped to help a family of ducks cross the road is appealing her conviction.
Last month, a jury found Emma Czornobaj, 25, guilty of dangerous driving causing death and criminal negligence causing the deaths of motorcyclist Andre Roy, 50, and his daughter Jessie, 16.
The father and daughter were hurtled into the air after they rear-ended Czornobaj's car that had been parked in the left lane of Highway 30, just outside of Montreal in Candiac, Que., on June 27, 2010.
The trial heard that Czornobaj, who was driving a Honda Civic, stopped her car, got out and crouched over the ducks, gesturing for them to move, when the motorcyclists slammed into her car. The man and the teen died on impact.
Czornobaj told the court that she was trying to rescue the eight ducks.
The court heard that Czornobaj, who had three years of driving experience, did not put on her hazard lights when she stopped her car.
On Monday, Czornobaj filed papers to appeal the conviction.
Her sentencing hearing was due to start Aug. 8.
The maximum sentence for dangerous driving causing death is 14 years in prison.
More than 12,000 people have signed an online petition to keep Czornobaj out of prison and asking Quebec's justice minister to recommend the "least severe sentence possible."

Ever been behind a car that swerved around some roadkill at the last second and you end up going right through it because you couldn't see it until the guy ahead of you swerved? That's how

Then you are following to close.

Then you are following to close.

Oh, we have a perfect driver over here!!!!

On the highway I like to leave a bigger gap, 2-3 seconds if not more, and I can tell you that 99% of other road users leave a ~1 second gap.

Almost every single driver on a busy highway is following too close.

I really hope she does time.

So the car is expected to plow through the ducks, possibly damaging their car. Ok, I can accept that, since there's 4 wheels, chances are that's the most prudent thing to do. Now what if a motorcycle faced such a hazard? It's clearly *less* safe to try and squash some animals with your 2 wheels.

Avoid them, try to go around, but don't park your bike in the left lane while you go checking on the ducks

Am I the only one to think that the penalty is too much?

Would you think the penalty was too much if it was your mom and sister that were killed as a result?

If you leave any space in front of you another car will fill it in seconds
