Curious how the "Hacked computer" scam works

About once a month or so I get a call from someone who can barely speak English telling me he is from the internet ITT and my computer has been hacked and I need to follow his instructions.

I did once. He told me to turn on my computer and click on "Start" which I did. However it was my old clunker and not connected to the net so he got a little frustrated and finally gave up.

Just exactly what is the angle? I'm assuming they can take over, plant stuff etc. Yes I'm a luddite.

They have a few angles. Most start with you giving them remote access to the machine.

1) they put ransomeware on the machine and you have to give them money to get back control
2) they put spyware on to get banking, etc logins
3) after a while they tell you they need cc info...

If you finish all their instructions you open "remote assistance" which enables them to have a mirror image and access to all your files. I played with them one day screaming and yelling that their directions weren't working and I was so scared because of the error reports may break my computer lmao.

Edit. Exactly what the guy before me said lol.

I always **** with those guys ...

Tell em im sitting in front of the computer watching porn, and than start describing everything in detail.

Actually the scam Isn't Ransomeware or spyware at least not what I have seen, I have a number of Virtual boxes are ran through the whole thing a few times.

They generally install an off the self remote assistance tool like Team viewer or something. Get control of your PC with your. Then they will either direct you to a payment site and ask you to pay them to continue support or sometimes will do some vugely technical things so its looks like your being fixed up. If you then refuse to pay or your payment details are fake and get refused then they will start deleting your desktop icons or doing other things to be *****. They they insult you in chat on the phone.

The scam is simply in the payment. Mind you there may be other variations of it but i haven't seen any malicious code being downloaded to the machines I let them play with.

I have heard of them both installing malware, and charging for their useless services. The FTC is trying to shut down these people when they can find them, but it's likely a losing battle. I was really proud of my parents when neither of them fell for it before I warned them about it!

I usually tell them to email me the info since they theoretically have my email addy.
Another time I asked them how long ago the hacking had been going on. When the guy said a several weeks I gave him a blast for not calling me sooner and told him I was changing systems because they were so negligent in keeping me up to date.
