99 R1 trans

So long story short a friend of mine had the notorious second gear issue. After yesterday it's apparently jammed in 3rd now (haven't seen it yet so I don't know specifics) so he's looking for a new trans for his bike. Anyone know any leads on where to get one?I would assume there will be a range of years that will fit it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

98-02 same problem in the 98-02 R6. Though I've read that its cheaper to replace, there is a fix kit for around $250 from www.ronayers.com provided he strips it and installs it himself. The other option is eBay for $40 but its a temp fix. If he wants to hard shift up from first or down from third, I was told this kit was the best option.
