I've used the sticky string type from CTC for years. Works fine. BUT, if you prefer, it's better to use the mushroom type from inside the tire.
In the thread area that is. You aren't supposed to patch if in the side wall.
Patch and a plug combo is safest. I've repaired hundreds of tires and this is the only reliable method. You have to drill the hole as well to eliminate all the fissures around the penetrated area.
... And yes, no shoulders and sidewalls.
Any shop can patch a tire, doesn't need to be a motorcycle one. Just ask them. I install my bike tires using a car tire mounter.
