Looking for a new desktop, halp!

Is it a better processor though? I'm reading the AMD A10 6700's performance is the equivalent of a 3rd gen i3. But it does have 12gb of ram..
So it's either:

i5 4440 with 6gb ram
or
A10 6700 with 12gb of ram

If you're not gaming then you don't need anywhere close to 12 gb of ram, unless you professionally code videos or something. Go for the better processor, which has been Intel for the last 10 years or so. The last time AMD was on top was when they first released the Athlon 64.

My gaming rig has 8 gb of ram and I never come close to using it, never even come too close to using 6gb. And this is a rig with an i5 2500k at 5.0 ghz, two 120 gb SSD's in raid 0 and GTX 780 sli. If I needed more ram I obviously would have bought it. What's more important is the speed of the ram. I have 2133 mhz but 2400 and I think even faster is available now. I just can't use it on my sniper 3 mobo as it's a couple generations old and there's no way I'm going to a new Haswell processor with all their heat problems with overclocking.

I have some friends that go way to far. Liquid cooling, $200 graphics cards.. way over my head

Lol, a $200 vid card is mid range at best. Both of mine are still $580 plus tax a piece, and I have two. Not long ago I sold an old GTX 680 used even for $250. Good parts be expensive. The custom liquid cooling I'd like some day will come out to $1200-1500 on it's own. For now my off the shelf liquid will do, anyway.

6 gb will be plenty unless you game on it, like I said. For normal random applications and internet and stuff 6 gb will be plenty for the foreseeable future. Hell, my little net book only has 1gb of ram and I load it with a bazillion tabs all the time.

Agreed

the idea that PC's because outdated does not apply as it once did a decent 6gb machine with a decent processor will last you years to come if you look after it.

lol the laptops are 2g a few years ago the desktop were anywhere from 4-10k

Clearly im a noob.. :p

Why not just build one? if you can afford $800 you can build a decent pc that'll last you awhile (just need to upgrade parts rather than the whole tower depending)

I priced one out for fun just now. But I'm already at $704 without a graphics card, optical drive, OS and fan(or is the fan supposed to come with the case?).

am i doing this right?

I've been building my own computers and for others since 1997. I find the warranties and quality to exceed what you can buy mass produced.

Don't bother with 80 gold power supplies, without getting in depth it's a marketing gimmick. A name-brand 80 certified or bronze is more than enough and I'm a big believer in Seasonic power supplies.

I find NCIX has better sales and shipping prices than newegg. Tomshardware has really good price-point builds you can peruse to get an idea of what you can build vs cost.

If you're deadset on building your own, try this site: http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/

It supposedly only lists parts compatible and shows the cheapest place in Canada to get the part.

You can download win7 if you still torrent. I think i've selected the good named brands and also you don't need more fans if you're going to run stock like a mass produced pc. the gpu can be dropped and modifeid for a crappy one if you want. But this gpu should be able to handle medium level setting games.

+1

Whenever I'm about to build a new computer I check that site for the "best build for $xxxx", a new one each quarter. I think their minimul build is $800, but you likely don't need monitor, keyboard, etc and since this was from Q4 2013, prices will likely have dropped even further since then:

I wanted to mention that total system ram is usually in 2 or 4 module format (Dual Channel, Quad Channel). 6GB is an oddball because a 3GB module does not exist, so it would require an unmatched module eg. 4GB+2GB and would leave some memory in single channel mode (slower).

Some mobos are tripple channel and use 3x 2gb. My friend's i7 950 build I did for him uses this.

Yes, but I mean in the context of building one today. I'm not sure if that is still an option?
