Sturgis and Montana Me and my new girl go West

Good pic heavy read for a dreary winter afternoon. Thanks. The HD looks way comfy for the distance. Probably didn't want to get off and pose every second pic because it's not a light cycle. Would have liked to see pic of you with the girl.

Ya I remember following your trip.
You had some pretty impressive days there….miles wise.
Hell your whole trip was impressive.
I’m hoping to incorporate some of the roads you did into this year’s trip.
Looking at The Grand Canyon now and more of Colorado.
I love Sturgis…its such a beautiful area.
It can get a little crazy….I guess that’s why I go a week early.
I think everyone should do Sturgis once.

Awesome trip! So jealous :)

Thanks for sharing .

Did you prebook hotels / motels or just find accommodations along the way?

Hey Mat
Prebook....I don't like to.
Makes me have to get to a certain place at the end of the day and i don't like that.
I prefer to take things as they come.
but i look for things in advance.
take this trip for example....coming into Cody WY i was getting surround by dark clouds.
****** weather was upon us so i darted to a car wash.
It didn't look like it was going to let up any and it was then that i decided to call it a day.
i had research Cody and knew it was an expensive town to stay in
(about $150 a night)
But sitting there you could see all these bikes headed to town and they were looking for rooms also.
so i bit the bullet and headed to the closest Super 8
Good thing too cause it ****** down
Rain is different in the west....one raindrop would fit into a shot glass....its ridiculous.
but it all worked out in the end.
but in answering youR question....no i normally don't book ahead of time.
Now that being said...if you are going to a big event like Sturgis then ya when you are going there i book ahead.
Just before i left Cody i had the girl at the Super 8 call ahead to The Chief in Custer SD and book my room.
Its pretty close to Sturgis and rooms fill up fast for the Rally.
most places in a 100 mile radius of Sturgis are all book up for the Rally a year in advance

It's funny how we are all circularly inspiring each other :)

I think I will actually go to Montana, Dakotas & NorCal next.

Great job on the report. All of us learn something with each report posted. I'm showing my wife the report because she just got her new heritage softail delivered yesterday. So now there should be no reason to avoid longer trips. Thanks again

Now this is just imo but.....
If you have a weekend and want to get away....Then Pennsylvania is the place to go.
If its a long weekend then still do PA just add the Finger Lakes in that trip.

If you have a week off then The Smokey Mountains is the place to go.
You can easily get there in 2 days and get home in 2.
Or do 2 down and tour home in 3days.

Now if you have more than a week then I say Sturgis is your best bet.
But don't do just Sturgis....add a side trip like Wyoming or Colorado
Keep in mind Colorado to Sturgis is only 4 hours.
But like I said....this is just imo

Thanks, looking at your map, seems I can trust your advice. It's still going to take a while to get from hours to days though. I'm sure this season will change that situation.

Yeah, thanks for the thread. Did the same trip to Sturgis, Cody and ultimately ended up at Old Faithful before heading home. I like the advice about pounding until things get interesting. I fell asleep late afternoon at a rest stop on my second day so I knew it was time. Heading there again this summer - probably expand from Cody up to Kelowna. Also like your benefits vs drawbacks on going it alone. It's certainly quicker running on your own :).
