came off bike, broken clavical

For those of you that had the plate taken out, how was the recovery process? Quick and painless with no complications?

The plate on my ulna (inner forearm bone) is causing me some pain when lifting. My orthopedist offered to take it out, but not sure if another surgery is worth the risk.

Been a while but I think it was standard rest for 6 weeks, physio (on my own) for another 6, normal after that..

++++1 Slap I agree.... Micheal Mckee is a fantastic orthopedic surgeon. One of the best in Canada he put my leg back together. The rotational fractures were so severe and numerous that no other surgeon in Ontario wanted to even attempt the surgery. The surgeon in Ottawa was discussing amputation and I the spend a week in hospital waiting to find someone capable and Mike and his drills stepped up LOL. I was told he goes to Iraq to train the America surgeons all the new procedures.

There are lots of CDN MDs like this, I wish people would tell more stories and address this myth of superior health care in the US. It is very difficult to get into CDN medical schools, and difficult to qualify to work in Canada. Anyone with money can get an MD degree in the US from Southern or off-shore "medical schools", all you need is money.

McKee is the best there is anywhere. He has opened me up twice. Once on the hand and once to put my shoulder back together. You can get this done at numerous hospitals with other doctors but they are not all equal. McKee is the man. I know people who have had screws come out and have to have more surgery to correct it. Go with the best. Won't cost you any extra.

ElMaraghy is another one of the top arm and shoulder specialists; currently working out of St Joseph's. If you ever get taken there, ask for him by name, you won't regret it.

The most important factor in determining surgical outcome, is the surgeon.

Amen! The first one I got was too scared to touch a scalpel to the point of preferring for me to end up with a deformed shoulder. Screw him and the horse he rode in on and thank God that the receptionist screwed up and scheduled me on a day when Elmaraghy was attending!

Came off the bike Nov 12 on some ice, its been 8 weeks and I still look like this today.

I have to go back in another six weeks for another x ray. If it doesn't get better I will need the surgery. Has anyone had the collar bone plates screwed in?

I've had the surgery. I broke mine in a football game (not soccer) a few years back. Got to watch in on film, pretty ugly!

Surgery wasn't fun. You loose mobility and it's never the same. Good luck!

I decided on Nov 3rd to take my track bike for one final run after changing over to coolant, stupid move one for taking a bike with race tires out in 6deg weather and two, not wearing gear (private drive where i store the bike). I got bucked off the bike and suffered major head trauma, was hospitalized for 16 days and my broken collar bone was the least of their concern and i wasnt even in a sling until 12 days after the accident. This is what the break looked like and i have now lost about an inch on my left side, when i asked about surgery i had three doctors advise not to do it. No idea what i should do, so OP i understand your position. Next x-ray is Jan 31

I have doubts with hardware in my body as I had jaw surgery years ago and my body drove almost half of those buggers out = two extra surgeries.

Fractured my clavical bone about a year ago, 6 weeks in a sling and 3 weeks of physio and acupuncture and then i was good to go, my shoulder sit about an inch lower than it used to.

had an off at the track in Aug - broken clavical and 2 ribs not fun - CB set back itself really nice and clean within a week but I somehow twisted the wrong way and the set had broken again - off to surgery - 7 screws and a plate -
Today - full range of motion back to excercise and weights -
I pushed to get the surgery I didn't want to ****** around anymore

If you can get away with it, try St Joseph's in Roncessvales area and ask for Dr. Elmaraghy. You're welcome

Thanks a lot. Will see if I can get referenced into there when I go to Oshawa's fracture center. Really hope my first doc isn't incompetent.

Instinctual;y grabbed front brake when my right peg caught the floor causing the rear to slide out. I was ejected off after and landed funny. Swollen right thumb, left clavicle, and tons of soreness on left side of body. No camera this time sadly lol

It'd be turn 3 if you count the chicane before it.

Mine was.. Afraid of touching the scalpel... When the initial fracture happened, the bones were lined up so he told me to just wear a sling.. After 3 weeks, the 3 pieces were all over the place. Fortunately the receptionist screwed up - booked me for Thursday in 3 weeks but told me to come on Friday. That's when Dr. Elmaraghy was attending the fracture clinic. Gave me all the information that I needed to make an informed decision and left it up to me. I chose the scalpel and he did a great job.. Same when I came to him to take out the plate. All I had to do was follow his instructions and I'm back to 110% :p

I've had my plate in over 3 almost 4 years... Wonder if I should get it taken out. Life with metal in you sucks. Hip and clav. So far :(
