Smokey Mountains - the Kamakazi version

So there I was Friday night in my motel room in Georgetown, Ky researching interesting rides in the area. Got up Saturday morning, wiped frost off bike - stared south on I-75 and one thing led to another. Screw weather gods and screw work gods - Deals Gap here I come. Anyway I needed a new T shirt..

The route is simple - I-75 to I-40 to 129 south to 143 - ride Cherahola to Tellico Plains - stay overnight, rinse and repeat.

If it sounds boring - well it wasn't. 129 amd Cherohala were gorgeous - spectacular scenery - even I-75 looked beautiful decked out in its fall colours. Not sure on route back home yet - no internet access in last night's cabin so have to check weather reports now.

Got a few pic on my Ipod but no time to download yet.

Good luck with the weather!

Beautiful!

Good on you for heading all the way down. I'm sure it was worth it. For a route home, take a twisty backroads route until you get into VA, WV and then slab it home to avoid the rough weather at elevation?
Safe Journey.

I detoured a bit coming back to check out a couple of gems in Kentucky - Hwy 52 and 213 (Furnace Road) - unfortunately I didn't have time to complete 52 and then I made a wrong turn on 213 and ended up on an amazing little road whose name I can't remember.

The trip could have done with a little more planning and losing the 5th day didn't help, but still an awesome way to end the touring season.

That looks like a fun route that I might include in may annual May Smokey Mountains trip. I usually come back north on the US Memorial Day weekend so staying off the Blue Ridge is a must. This route could be added on to The Snake 421 between Mountain City and Bristol.

Thanks for the route.

Nice photos and see that you still have the FZ1, I do miss mine for touring, how many kms on her/him now?

163,000 kms and still going strong. I love this bike and its going to break my heart when I have to get a new one - its a much better bike than I am a rider.
