If cities are smart, they'd have someone who tracks the total costs of ownership and maintenance before buying a year's lot of police cars.

The police motor is the non-turbo model so it's a moot point anyways.

Oh they do. That's why most police agencies are switching away from HD bikes to Euro tourers
 
A 365 hp car is not going to be on the same planet as a 600 sportbike as far as performance. They will however be close enough that when you panic and slow down or wipe out trying to corner that they will run you over. If you suggest running at any rate.

Cities have analysis of anticipated cost and maintenence for dept budgeting and total cost is historically tracked so when replacement time comes around previous issues arent repeated.
It may look like some guys sitting around say "hey lets buy some of those!" , but competing for market share of fleet sales make manufacturers try hard and procurement people pay attention.
 
You are probably right.

I don't have evidence to support this but I heard that a sergeant or staff sergeant is notified when a scout car/ cruiser goes over 140 kilometers per hour which probably equals an arse tonne of paperwork for the officer. I heard this after the Peel officer died at Derry and Airport last year.

Anyone else heard this?

It doesn't really matter how fast the cop car CAN go, they probably wont be chasing you over 200km/h anyways city or highway.

They just need to accelerate fast enough to get your plate :p

Exactly what I was thinking.

If Ford were to sell a turbocharged car to law enforcement and it didn't work out (through their own fault, or because they were misused - turned off after spooling the hell out of the turbos, idled for 2 hrs straight, ...), I bet GM or Chrysler's getting the next contract.

Granted, it depends on the city, the honesty of the sales pitch, and the people making the procurement decision. Because, like, totally, all of my city's procurement decisions have been slam dunks :lmao:

That's why you make it not easy to see. A few plate not visible tickets are worth it in the long run ;)

Why is everyone worried about turbos and idle time? Ever seen a cruiser stand still? If so what's it doing.....idling!

Oh and what's a turbo timer worth these days? Couple hundred? Prob worth the investment.

Not all police interceptors will be the turbo'd models mostly traffic division units and under covers will be. Regular patrol will be no turbo'd for obvious reasons.

Oh and despite the reviews the officers for the most dislike them. They are smaller then the Vic and with a duty belt on they are not easy to get in/out of.

As a tax payer I'm confident some testing and cost analysis has been done before all these orders went in lol

Also if a cruiser is close enough to see you chances are you're already screwed. Oh and the more you customize your bike the easier you make it for the traffic specialist to pick your bike out.

With the retiring of the reliable Crown Vics in late 2011, there had to be a replacement soon. Ford's answer is a specifically designed 6th generation Taurus which they are simply calling Ford Police Interceptor Sedan.

I saw one for the first time yesterday from my "beloved" Niagara Regional Police and I will admit it does look pretty intimidating. Ford says this packs a 3.5L EcoBoost V6 which produces an impressive 365hp going to its all-wheel-drive system.

They also have a specifically designed SUV replacement as well.

Figured I'd share so that we can all get used to seeing how these cars look. We're pretty accustomed to the sight of Crown Vics, Chargers and the odd Impala. They will clearly come in unmarked versions as well.

No need to worry.... its a newer design Ford. We won't see many of them. They'll spend more time in the shop than on the road.

They'll be begging Ford to bring back the CrownVic
 
Personally I don't see any valid reason that traffic enforcement should be running around with unmarked cars.

I believe it goes against everything that they should be working towards.

The idea behind traffic enforcement is that they should be visible and identifiable, so that we are reminded of our duty to drive within the law when we see them and check our behavior accordingly. We should also have no trouble identifying them when they attempt to pull us over.
There are too many incidents of road raging people impersonating a police officer these days. Personally I've come across two in the past few years, when I didn't cow-toe to their demands to wave me over they took off. (Real police don't take off when you give them the finger.)

Running around in unmarked cars causes nothing but confusion, and IMO amounts to a lowering of the general integrity level of the police.
It is akin to skulking around in the shadows like thieves.
 
If this motor is shared with the Ecoboost F150, and tuned the same, a 365 hp car with 420 ft lbs of torque down low in the rev range, and AWD will be an absolute monster.
I would be willing to bet this car, well driven, would put the fear of god into most 600cc sportbike riders. CArs can take city corners, manhole covers, painted lines, gravel strewn roadways etc, all much faster than a sportbike ridden by a terrified rider.

This new Taurus platform makes me nervous more from a strength standpoint. Cops drive thru fields, over curbs and traffic islands etc. A big RWD car with a live axle (like a truck) is much more accepting of that kind of abuse than a 4 wheel independent suspension car with CV axles at all 4 corners etc.

I'm dead serious about everything I said there.

Chief's, executive/administrative staff and possibly detectives that require the use of a police car MAY be considered valid to use an unmarked car.

Other than that there is no reason that a police officer that wears a uniform and deals with the public should be driving anything other than a fully marked car.

I think it's much closer to performance than a Crown Vic, per se.

Still, it's going to be loaded down with extras and it will have a light bar on the roof. I think most supersports could outrun it and pull away at speed. You're completely right that 'real life' stuff like gravel, potholes, traffic, etc. would bridge that gap, or really test the skill of a rider in order to get away.

It's kind of a different feeling to know the cops might have a comparable/faster car vs. my VFR. Not that I would ever run...

Guys,

They are two puny Garrett GT 15's @ 12 PSI of boost. T2's like the one found on the VW 1.9L TDi

Water cooled turbos from this century don't really have the issues that your Dad's Omni Turbo had.....
 
So...come up with a good argument why they should be allowed to use unmarked cars for anything they want.

Trashing the GTAM membership isn't a valid debate on the topic.

1) Undercover or not we all should be driving accordingly.
2) there's enough marked cars to justify my tax dollars
3) if in doubt it's an impersonator. We all have cell phones. Call dispatch. They'll confirm.
4) there's no such law that states officers "vehicles" need to be visible all the time.

I could go on. But your ignorance isn't worth the rest of the debate.
